It was an off-the-cuff remark, but the gist of what I was getting at was that when someone plays the "oh well I like [band x] but then again, I'm open-minded *smug facial expression*" card, they're generally talking about lowest common denominator muck like Atreyu.

Wasn't expecting an interogation.

Bloody hell, couldn't they have held the Olympics in a more politically correct country like, I don't know, Iran?

These protests were way cool. I like the way all the athletes and pooliticians were on about how it was nothing to do with politics at all and only about "the magical spirit of the olympics". Hmm thanks guys but I'm not sure that's how the Chinese government see it. To them it's more like "look how much the world loves us. Obviously it's all cool as they gave us the games and let us run our parade of harmony through their streets. So let's get on with beating down a few Tibetans and democracy activists".

Things getting better in China is everything to do with street protest and nothing to do with the magical power of the Olympics. All those politicans that disagree are lying, because their countries are full of businessmen that are up to their eyeballs in CHinese investment.

Fuck off nowadays Olympics.

Yeh, it is good that it's rasing worldwide attention to the situation in China, which is, to make an understatment, not good. I'm just surprised they let 'em hold the damn thing there in the first place.

Yeah pushing a kids TV presenter over to extinguish a torch will free Tibet.

Sorry but I hate this kind of protestor. Basically because it's all they do. Go to uni, go on the doll, travel around various protests, offer nothing productive to anyone except increasing spending on policing events. No thanks.

I still don't like the fact that the people carrying the torch where basically saying China's OK.

Yes, because you're not a proper protestor unless you draw blood.

Way to miss the point.

Well, you'd like to see protestors actually Making A Point by what, hanging a policeman from a lamp-post? They do pretty well with what they're given, I think.

Non-violent resistance work ok for Ghandi. All I'm saying is protest away, but putting out a torch (just like throwing yourself at a fence at Gleneagles or whatever) isn't going to get you anywhere. It just makes you look like an unsympathetic loonball. The abuse the police take at events like these is completely unfair for men just doing their jobs.

It's symbolic, and so is subject to an entire new world of insanity. I'm sure if the protestors could just target the creepy Chinese clones in their matching clothing, they would, but I've spoken to enough policemen in my time to know that they're hardly the world's most sympathetic people, or the most intelligent. Let them get sprayed with fire extinguishers!

Sorry, no sale. Cops have it hard enough dealing with junkies and pissed neds at 3 in the morning. And not to sound like an Express columnist or anything, but where does the cost of all this extra policing come from when the "TONY BLAIR IS TEH WAR CRIME!" banner-wavers come to town?
