It's symbolic, and so is subject to an entire new world of insanity. I'm sure if the protestors could just target the creepy Chinese clones in their matching clothing, they would, but I've spoken to enough policemen in my time to know that they're hardly the world's most sympathetic people, or the most intelligent. Let them get sprayed with fire extinguishers!
Sorry, no sale. Cops have it hard enough dealing with junkies and pissed neds at 3 in the morning. And not to sound like an Express columnist or anything, but where does the cost of all this extra policing come from when the "TONY BLAIR IS TEH WAR CRIME!" banner-wavers come to town?
Bah. Without all the "Tony Blair war criminal posters" isn't there a good chance he would actually still be in charge? He went because the fact everyone hated him became so visible, right? Seems like most people should be thanking them rather than taking the piss. Protestors are the people that are actually doing something rather than just affecting trendy apathy.
Let's look at the situation here. Tyrannical murderous regime wins right to host the Olympic games, and remains completely unchallenged because Western politicians try and tell us that it's better if they have it because the Olympics will bring a spotlight on them that will make them improve.
Mind-bogglingly unsurprisingly, no such thing has happened, and said tyrannical regime, in the week that the torch is going round the world, marches into a colonized country and starts massacring people on the streets. This is to say absolutely nothing of what goes on inside that country.
The politicians still won't say anything. Partly because they're spineless creatures, and partly because an awful lot of the unpleasantness and repression that goes on there, Western companies working in China are deeply complicit in.
So then, a whole bunch of people decide that they're going to challenge the assumption that everything about this scenario is just fine and dandy. They make the organizers of the relay of harmony or whatever it is called look like fucking twats in front of the rest of the world. Same thing happens in Paris, and the same thing happens in San Francisco. Sorry, but anyone who thinks they are the bad guys in all of this needs their head examined
None of it was violent. Konnie Huq had about 15 Chinese bodyguards. Three cheers for semi-peaceful protest, for without it you only need to look at a few history books to realise the world would be a vastly worse place than it is now.
