Supporting the team of a city you've never been to is such a fucking foriegner thing to do.

I know I'm assuming here.

We'll you have every right to say that. I'm from Malaysia and I also support my local team. But you have to understand that the English League is widely covered here, by the print press and broadcasters. We get live coverages of the matches every weekend. So tell me what's the point of watching the matches if you don't support the teams?

Our local league is very weak and so is our national team. But we still support it because they're our state teams. And with this league, we have state rivalries which have led to bloodsheds and casualties in the past. We still have it now, but very mellowed. It's like how I'm from Negeri Sembilan, and I support the NS team. NS have been rivals with Perak for ages. And from this football rivalry, it has developed to state rivalry. When we NS natives meet any Perakians, there's always this disliking we have for each other which ends up in fights. And when a Perak band plays, the NSers always throw booes and shoes even if the band is great. It's this rivalry which we have thanks to football.

So Metalhead_Bastard, I understand your rants, but hey, you guys have an interesting league which is fun to watch and I don't see any harm in supporting the teams.

lol, fucking liverpool fans. Go to the city centre on a saturday and you get a shit load of norweigens or some shit asking you where anfeild is, 'yeah mate, you get on the train, get off at john lennon airport and fuck right off!'

What? lol. I don't support the city, I support the players that make up the team, or do I have to meet the players first before I can support them?

Thats not cool. So if your favorite player leaves do you start supporting his new side? What if a player you hate joins, do you start supporting another team?

I agree with metalhead, you should support your local team (or if all your family supports that team then its ok). But i see where hellraiser is coming from, i live within an hours drive of man u, man city, bolton, wigan, EVERTON, liverpool, and blackburn and a shit load of lower league teams. If you live on the other side of the globe your only likely to see the sky 4 play regularly so its understandable why so many people support em. But you support English clubs at the peril of your own leagues. Also i doubt you get the same sence of tradition and history of a club when you don't have the older generations telling you about the great players and teams of the past, you only get that when your local to your team. I mean how many liverpool fans in Malaysia could tell you about Hysel? Or Bill Shankley? Or the great teams of the 70's? Not many i would suspect. I suppose you could read about em but its not the same.

what about Real x Barcelona? 4-1!!! Barça have been increasingly shitty since their excellent champions league victory. i kinda like them more than real, but this season they never deserved to win anything.

François Sterchele, striker for Club Bruges and the Belgian national team died in a carcrash this night.

Great player and may he score goals wherever he is now.

i don't know where i stand on this. he is a good coach and he did good things with Benfica (first stint UEFA Cup final, second stint Champions League final), but this was a rather disappointing season for Man City, especially considering how much money they spent, plus he probably commands a hefty salary himself.

FC Porto presient Pinto da Costa was suspended for 2 years and his club lost 6 points in the current championship. CORRUPT PIECE OF FUCKING SHIT!!

especially between 1995 and 2003-4 FC Porto was carried to the top by dubious refereeing, but i doubt there are further punishments (this season Porto were deserving champions, and 6 points are barely a dent when you lead by 20 points one game from season's end).

unfortunately, the punishment seems somewhat forced - they picked up the weakest possible examples. in this case, the 6 points relate to two games that Porto didn't need to win as they were already champions, and in a season when they also won the Champions League. this whole fucking process was a sham! they're just doing this to make it seem like justice was served, when in effect nothing changes, and the lies just go on.

call me a sore loser, but even when Benfica was playing like shit (and i won't deny we did most of the time), there were refereeing decisions that would make any football fan go mad with fury, ridiculous penalties, red cards, offsides, anything to either help Porto or hinder their rivals.

Az, did I hear that Boavista have been relegated despite finishing about 11th? What happened there?

true. i'm still not really sure about what happened here. Boavista somehow got a heavier penalty, both in sporting and financial terms, than both Porto and União de Leiria. the funny thing is, Porto got 6 points taken when they had a 20 point lead, and Leiria got 3 points taken when they were in last place.

and also, why take the points from THIS season? it doesn't make any sense. either take them away from the season when those games happened or have them start of next season with -6 points.

complete bullshit.

good deal on the ticket, btw. i still wanted Fiorentina to go through, though

Ya, although I've always been stuck between Everton and Liverpool due to my family (my dad has a Liverpool tattoo!) but many of my friends support Everton.

To be fair, I've always supported Everton. I just see football as more than sport, but still hate drunk people talking about it.

Rui Costa, probably my favourite player, just finished his last match. at age 36, he's hanging up his boots to join the management.

Image

there was a big tribute put on for the Maestro's last game, including speeches from legendary FC Porto captain Jorge Costa and former president Jorge Sampaio. he was the captain and made one assist in this 3-0 victory, being substituted to a standing ovation at the 86th minute, crying.

he was part of the Golden Generation, a group of Portuguese youth players that won two youth world cups (1989 and 1991), coached by Carloz Queiroz. the Maestro was a part of the second group, which also included Luís Figo, Jorge Costa, João Pinto, Fernando Couto and Abel Xavier, beating Brazil in the final.

notice Figo's hair do.

he started out in Benfica's football school (video of him showing his class at age 14 against Sporting's youth squad here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CM8NxyVObo), joining the main squad in 1991. he was transferred out to Fiorentina in 1994, amid massive financial troubles at Benfica.
Image

he spent 7 years in Florence, captaining a side that also included Gabriel Batistuta. in an especially memorable episode, Fiorentina played Benfica in Lisbon, and Rui Costa scored and cried (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kC0qpfumQsY).

Fiorentina also got into financial trouble and sold him to AC Milan, where he spent 5 seasons, winning the Champions League.
http://www.record.pt/getimage.asp?tb=DE ... &id=104518[/img

in 2006, he agreed to end his contract with AC Milan to finally return to Benfica, allegedly signing a contract before even discussing his wages. when Benfica visited San Siro in 2007, he received a standing ovation. "che bello rivederti!" ("how nice to see you again!"), said the club's website.

Benfica failed to collect any silverware these past two seasons, but he still says that nothing beats the happiness of being able to finish his career in the club he loves.

THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!!!

I was glad Giggs scored the final goal... Don't know if he'll retire or not after this season but, if he does, it was quite a great finalé for such a great player!
