I should give Immolation another chance. Everyone keeps heaping praise upon them but I just don't get it.

Well, I suggest you trying their earlier albums first to get into their unique sound, start with Shadows in The Light and Harnessing Ruin (most accessable album) then you get Unholy Cult and this one. Dawn of Possession the one with the most old school sound for last. At least that's what I did and now I can't get them out of my head. Amazing...

Yes, it's a bit impenetrable at first. I've only got Failures For Gods, and it's really taking its time to work its magic.

Failures for Gods is pretty much their worst release, so if you like that one you will have no problem getting into their other albums.

Failures For Gods is a great album. Once Ordained, No Jesus No Beast, Unsaved and my personal fav, Your Angel Died( for it's hard hitting lyrics) are outstanding tracks. The major drawback is the muddy production that spoils everything. Close To A World below is better. I don't think the album kind of loses steam halfway. It is pretty consistent. There's a moment in the title track, don't remember after how many minutes, but it's the solo after the part where he growls, "So, pick a god when there's no one left that can save us from ourselves." It's a short one. It's so damn doomy, eerie and sinister. Timeless ! This album is one of my favs.
