At the end of the day, Slayer fucking rule. Plus, Araya (on the topic of naming an album 'God Hates us All') said that he thought it sounded fucking cool and would piss people off.
He was raised a Catholic but doesn't really seem to be an active church goer so I very much doubt the shit about him going to confession, that's just idiots making things up I reckon.
Araya is a self-proclaimed Christian who fails at evangelizing and actually does more harm than good in terms of evangelizing. So he's either lying, hypocritical, or too illiterate to read what Paul wrote. But fuck I'm an atheist what do I know?
He's in a tricky situation, I think. He was a college student when he joined Slayer. And, of course, he was probably still going through that "teenage rebellion" stage. So, if he IS in fact religious, he probably didn't really become religious until later in his life (I read, though, that he used to go to church very frequently as a child, though that was probably more the choice of his parents than himself). Notice how it's usually Kerry King that writes Slayer's anti-religious songs. Tom, on the other hand, usually sticks to decidedly less religiously offensive topics like serial killers, war, and the government. I think, since Slayer's mostly his full-time profession, he's worried that, if he quits, he'll be out of work. And then he'll probably have a lot of financial/family problems. So he probably feels he has to just bite the bullet and do whatever Kerry King wants him to do. It should also be mentioned that Catholicism isn't as legalistic or religiously strict as denominations like Baptism and Evangelism. So Tom Araya being a Catholic isn't quite as ironic as him being a Baptist or Evangelical.
In a way, you actually have to admire Tom. It takes a lot of discipline (and faith) to not let what you're singing about in a band like Slayer affect your religious beliefs. Provided Tom actually succeeds in not letting them affect him.
