the 23 picks for the Euro 2008 Dream Team:
GK: Buffon, Iker Casillas and Edwin van der Sar
Defenders: Bosingwa, Philipp Lahm, Carlos Marchena, Pepe, Carles Puyol and Yuri Zhirkov
Midfielders: Hamit Altintop, Luka Modric, Marcos Senna, Xavi Hernández, Konstantin Zyryanov, Michael Ballack, Cesc Fàbregas, Andrés Iniesta, Lukas Podolski, Wesley Sneijder
Forwards: Andrei Arshavin, Roman Pavlyuchenko, Fernando Torres, David Villa

agree/disagree?

i'd take out Modric and put Deco there, maybe Altintop for Schweinsteiger or Silva as well. didn't know Podolski was a midfielder :P. Klose was also quite good.

most of Spain's midfield deservedly made it onto the ideal squad - imo, Senna, Xavi and Iniesta were the most important players in Spain's campaign.

I think Schweinsteiger and Silva had done a better championship that Ballack and Modric.

And the balls of all the turkish team deserve to be in that list

I dunno, I found Nikopolidis an ok keeper, one of the better goalies in Euro 2008. He was an instrumental player for Greece during Euro 2004. That's why it baffles me to see what he did in that video. He should have retired 4 years ago.

what about Ronaldinho, signing for AC Milan? he's 28, usually he'd be hitting the very peak of his form at this age, but instead he's fat and deppressed. i'm sure that with the right kind of support (which he didn't get from Rijkaard) he can regain the form he showed when he led Barcelona to European glory. imagine: Kaka + Pato + Ronaldinho in shape - fucking lethal!
i don't think the Serie A is the right league for a player like him, but considering the only other offer was from Man City i think he made the right choice.

in other news, it seems Benfica signed Pablo Aimar. here's hoping he's not just another washed up player..

Scariest midfield combination in European football.

I don't think we'll see again the old Ronaldinho, the one that give Barça glory days. I may be wrong, but it's more easy that he return to shape and become again a good player, but not the great player he once was.

And I think Serie A is the worst place for a player like Ronaldinho, and AC Milan couldn't save Ronaldo or Rivaldo and return them to their glory days... they were older when they go, I know, but we'll see.

Watched Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's testimonial-match. What a player. Awesome career. During the flashbacks of his career, i almost shed a tear.

I'm curious about the outcome of the Premier League and the Primera Division this year. In the PM, Arsenal have done some excellent transfers, Chelsea have thrown out some useless players, and Tottenham is my outsider for this year, they did some brilliant transfers, and managed to get Robinson out.

As for the Spanish competition: I think Real will win again, but Barcelona seems good enough to make it very exciting. I hope Atletico Madrid (my fav. team) will keep getting better so that they can one day go for the championship.

Spurs sold Robbie Keane to Liverpool for €30 million or so, wtf?! they have a strong team and held on to Berbatov. if one of the giants has a bad season they could very well contend for a Champions League spot. Arsenal are looking really good too, Bendtner is in great shape and a few more talented young players have popped up.

Barcelona strengthened their defense and sold off the unhappy Ronaldinho (while Eto'o also looks like he's on his way out). i doubt they can reproduce their stunning 2005/2006 form though.

Atletico also strenghened their defense with Ujfalusi and their attack kicks ass - Maxi Rodriguez, Simão Sabrosa, Forlán and the incredible Aguero! it'll be really hard to challenge for the title though.

i'm the most curious about the Serie A though - Inter have Mourinho as manager now, AC Milan bought Ronaldinho and if they can get him into shape they have one of the strongest teams in the world - Nesta, Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf, Kaka, Alexandre Pato, Ronaldinho and the veteran Maldini determined to finish his career in style - and Juventus are now settled now that they achieved promotion. 4 contenders - Inter, Roma, Milan, Juventus - and teams like Fioretina will make this a very interesting championship this year, i think.

wow, Rangers were knocked out by Lithuanian side Kaunas, managed by Portuguese coach José Couceiro, nicknamed in portugal José Coveiro (Gravedigger) for his work with clubs and the national youth teams there.

what i'm trying to say is good riddance. they have no idea how they even made it to the UEFA Cup final. yeah yeah they made do with what they had, but thei football was crap anyway. maybe it's the fact that you don't have anything that means that no, you're not worthy of lifting a European trophy. not one good moment of football, i for one am glad that their brand of anti-football won't be polluting the Champions League this season. hopefully "we're unbeatable at home but we couldn't win an away match if our lives depended on it" Celtic won't last long in the CL either.

sorry Craig

tonight, Benfica plays José Mourinho's Inter Milan for the Eusébio Cup. it's a friendly, but it's also the first edition of an anual tournament to honour one of the greatest players of all time: Eusébio da Silva Ferreira. since i'd rather sit here and reminisce about football players form the 60's than study Industrial Economics, here's a small tribute to this Portugal and Benfica legend:

according to legend, Benfica's coach Bela Guttmann was getting a haircut in Lisbon, and sitting next to him was São Paulo's coach. he told him about a fantastic young player he saw while Sao Paulo was touring Mozambique, and soon Guttmann went there and signed the player. his transfer to Benfica is surrounded in controversy, as his club in Mozambique was a nursery club to Sporting Lisbon. Eusébio had to be hidden away in some fishing village in the Algarve until the transfer details were ironed out.

Image

he was nicknamed "The Black Panther" or "The Black Pearl" and became known for his blistering pace, tremendous physical power, solid technique and his ability to deliver powerful and accurate shots regardless of angle, distance and pressure from defenders. he was able to create his own chances and spearheaded Benfica's devastating attack that helped make the club one of the dominant forces of European football in the 60's, reaching 5 Champions League finals between 1961 and 1968 and winning twice (61 and 62).

and that 1962 final in Amsterdam... fucking epic.. i'd give anything to live that night. Benfica were defending champions, but Real Madrid were the favourites. this was the seventh edition of the CL, and Real had won the first 5. their team boasted the likes of Gento, Alfredo Di Stefano and "the galloping major" Ferenc Puskas, arguably the greatest team to ever set foot on a pitch. each Real player's individual match bonus was bigger than Benfica's entire team bonus.
Real started in style, with Puskas scoring 2 goals before Benfica made it 2-2. Puskas scored a third before half-time, though, making in 3-2 and becoming the only man to score a hat-trick in the final and stil lose. in the second half, "The Black Panther", only 19 at the time, bared his claws for Europe for the first time, scoring the 4th and 5th goals as Benfica made and epic comeback to beat Real Madrid 5-3. he was carried out of the pitch on the fans' shoulders, holding his idol Di Stefano's shirt.

he's Benfica's all-time top scorer, with 317 goals in 301 matches, and second-best scorer in the National Team (64 matches/41 goals), although #1, Pauleta, has only 6 more goals in 22 additional matches.

Image

top scorer in the 1966 world cup with 9 goals, he scored 4 goals in Portugal's 5-3 victory over North Korea (coming back from 3-0 down).
Image
leaving the pitch in tears after England knocked out Portugal in the semi-final.

face to face: the black panther and the black widow, Lev Yashin

kicking so much as from such a young age, it wasn't long until the European giants tried to sign him. it took the government's influence, under claims that he was a national symbol and as such had to stay in Portugal, to stop a move to Inter Milan.

Individual honours:
European Footballer of the Year (65)
7 x Portuguese League Top Scorer (64 65 66 67 68 70 73)
European Golden Boot (68) with 42 goals
European Golden Boot (73) with 33 goals
IFFHS 6th European Player of the Century (99)
IFFHS 9th World Player of the Century (99)
Image

he was immortalised in a statue that marks the main entrance to our stadium:

awesome video of Eusébio in action:
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/k4p2q4ml6LbQXA8NGd
some goals are just normal, but others are fucking awesome. music is a bit cliché i guess but fits the video perfectly. please watch
