It is alright to criticize Russia for what they did fifty years ago because they are still doing it. As far as I know, they aren't still burning Jews in Germany but Russia is still militarily occupying states they have no business of entering like Romania.
Yeah, they are still doing it now. Besides, it's not like they did some abuses during WWII and that was that, "get over it, it was 50 years ago". Maybe that's convenient for a Belgian to say. For us, in Eastern Europe, that was only the begining. Our democracies were overthrown, the political leaders were jailed or executed and 40 years of communist regimes and ruthless dictatorships followed, all inforced by Russia. Whenever people tried to overtake these regimes or the regime itself tried to become more liberal, Russian tanks and soldiers marched in to settle things. It happened in Hungary, it happened in Cehoslovakia (on 20 August 1968, Cechks are commemorating 40 years right today). That's why former communist countries are so wary of Russia, that's why presidents of Ukraine, Poland and the baltic countries were the first to go to Tbilisi and show support. They know better what Russian attitude towards what they consider to be their "spheres of influence" really is, they know very well they can be next, especially Ukraine. While the Westerners are often naive about it.
And all this hatred towards US smells of hypocrisy, because if tomorrow Russia attacks another European country, say Belgium, all Belgians will fall on their knees and beg US to come and save their butts. And if US won't, then some nationalist Belgian kid will find out for himself just how stereotyped the views on Russian soldiers really are.
