It's my favourite Iced Earth album together with Someting Wicked. It's sheer power! BANG BANG BANG!

And not to forget, it's melodic too. The mix between catchy melodies and brute force is IMO the biggest strength of Jon Schaffer.

This is probably one of my favorite, if not my favorite Iced Earth album. I had no idea that it was viewed as underrated.

I think the albums "suffers" most because of Greely's vocals. Fans of the newer (Barlow-era) stuff think this album sucks because the vocals are nowhere near Barlow's level but the songs just kick some serious ass. Travel in Stygian is probably one of my favorite IE songs.

Greely is seven shades of awful, and he really does bring the entire album down. Not caring for a guy's style and wanting to sew his mouth shut with rusty coat hangers are two different things. Greely falls into the latter camp, and is almost as bad as Dave Padden. Almost. I much prefer the Barlow versions from Days of Purgatory, BUT, the music itself is top notch here and well-worth hearing.

I really dont hear what is so bad about Greely, he fits the album perfectly IMO.

With that said i think this is Iced Earth best album every song is killer, the riffs are the best ones Jon ever wrote and for once the concept doesnt hurt the album at all, 90/100 for me.

Yep, the best Iced Earth album by far. Greely isn't amazing but he's certainly not awful, like the singer they had on the first album (Adams, was it?). It has Schaeffer's best riffs and songwriting- the one bad part being the lead guitar, which has always been pretty bad in Iced Earth, until at least The Glorious Burden album, when it got average.

Yep, great album. I am not a big fan of this kind of metal, but this one is just so powerful and full of energy.

This is probably my favorite Iced Earth CD but 99/100? What the F. I mean, if you're going to go that far... Why not 100/100? What's keeping ONE point from being added?

I'd give it more like an 85/100 myself. It's a solid album but certainly not an utter classic in my opinion.

If I rated this album 100 then I would have more WTF's than I wanted.

I kept this under 100 for the sake of fans might have been a little more tedious with their opinions if this was rated at 100.

On top of that the ballads although good and they showcase Greely's diversified range they could have been longer but still pretty good at showcasing his voice.

Of course Barlow does better ballads.

This Iced Earth CD is kickass

I love the thrashy edge it has and the production (guitars with a very good crunch); this is Iced Earth's at it's best IMO
Though Burnt Offerings is very good in an atmospheric sort of way

The Days of Purgatory versions seem better (except for the production [pre-remix of Dark Genesis]) because of Barlow's vocals though, especially Angels Holocaust, where Barlow just has more charisma singing than Greely (though it can seem a bit melodramatic). Not to mention the acoustic interludes.

Favorite song on here is probably The Path I Choose or Travel In Stygian. :dio:

I don't think I've ever read a review that nut hugged Greely to this degree.

I'd personally take Barlow any day and prefer the purgatory versions of these songs for that reason.
This album is great, but I rarely listen to it all the way through because it all gets a bit samey after a while. People complain that there are too many ballads on Something Wicked, but I complain that there's not enough here. It just doesn't contain the variety of the some of the later releases and Schaffer hasn't yet mastered those massive epic chorus' yet.

But thats not as big of a knock as it may sound. It may only be one idea repeated 7 times, but at least its a great idea in the first place.

Stygian is awesome.
