Finished Anathem finally. Liked it in places, but the plot was disappointing for such an in-depth read, and the ending was a bit of a let-down. Worth ploughing though? Not really, I thought.

Just started - Stephen King - Duma Key

Completely agree with you. The book needed to be trimmed down, given a better plot (or at least one that actually started less than 750 pages in) and to get actual characters instead of stock philosophers talking about whatever Stephenson was interested in at the moment.

I bought Duma Key and haven't read it yet- looking to see what you think of it.

Der Seelenbrecher (the Soulbreaker) by Sebastian Fitzek. I love a good psychological horror story, and so far this is turning out well. trailer for it is hilarious though;

Read 'Children of Men' by her. Hopefully that book is better.

Nietzsche - Genealogy of Morality.

It is for a class and the professor completely despises it which is kind of annoying.

I have to read A Christmas Carol before tomorrow's class. As usually, I have to read it on the fuckin' internet because I can't find the book. I'll probably just get the audio book though, it's only a three-hour listen.

Dante's Inferno and The Canterbury Tales.

Class. again.

And I also read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Good for a kid's book and it was cool because I could see some of the Christian symbolism. Apparently the series is based on the ancient gods and this book is representative of Jupiter/Jove.

Oh my FUCK. I really hate when women try to make an audio book. Seriously, they just don't have the voice for it. This girl is especially annoying with her crazy fucking nasal voice grinding at my brain.

Is it obvious that I'm tired and annoyed as fuck?

Finished the rewarding, interesting and extremely confusing four
volume Book of the Long Sun by Wolfe.

Now onto Soldier in the Mist by Gene Wolfe, which looks kind of like a cross between Memento and ancient Greek history.

Okay, scratch that. Wolfe is absolutely amazing and everyone who likes scifi/fantasy, and even those that don't, should read him, but his books require a lot of effort and thought and I need a light read after the Book of the Long Sun.

So now I need to look through my books to read and find something lighter. I'm considering:

Acacia by David Durham
City of Saints and Madmen by Jeff Vandermeer
War of the Flowers by Tad Williams
Duma Key by Stephen King

Any opinions on any of these from anyone?

Duma Key's turning out to be nicely weird so far, but could go to shit. Have to wait and see on that one. After checking Amazon, I can confirm I've read WOTF, not bad but nothing earth-shaking. Should do for the 'lighter' thing, anyways.

Thanks man. I decided in the end to read a short book of short stories I'd forgotten I had called The Ladies of Grace Adieu by Susannah Clarke, but I think I'll read Duma Key when I'm done. The more I hear about War of the Flowers, the less I want to read it... Good thing I got it very cheap second hand, though I guess I should give it a try.

DOn't be put off by the fairy thing, but don't expect anything amazing, and you should get some enjoyment out of it.

As for Duma Key, coming towards the end of it. Probably the best 'new' King I've read as opposed to 'old' King; pretty good, but not mindblowing.

Erich Fromm - The Sane Society.

Claiming that our culture is literally not sane due to materialism, totalitarianism masquerading as democracy and advertising is awesome.

I'm currently reading Pride and Prejudice as part of my literature course. I'm somewhere near chapter 10 and think its pretty boring so far.

Also reading Holy Cow - and Indian Adventure by Sarah Mcdonald

Finally finished Stephenson's Zodiac, was ok, lost steam at the end.

Guys which is better, The Diamond Age or Cryptonomicon or the Baroque Cycle books?
