Musically, this is as spectacular as ever. I was a bit surprised by the vocals having thought Sanders really refined his growl into something powerful and unique all the while understandable and clear as a bell. He especially took such a giant step forward with Blood Mountain that this type of vocals was the last thing I expected. Verdict's still out for me but at least they didn't release the same record again.

Same here. This is an excellent album that I'll be listening to for a good long while, but better than Blood Mountain? Don't think so, yet...

Great album, grabbed this and new Queensryche at the same time, this album just blows the new QR away.

I think the new QR is great for what it is. I don't think it's meant to be an album like, say, Empires. I think it's more like a critic or a documentary put to music. Either way, I like it.. :)

As for Crack the Skye, I think it's awesome. I've been trying to get into this band more and more and this is the kind of album I wanted after Blood Mountain. Awesome album! :dio:

From what I've heard of Crack the Skye it blows Blood Mountain out of the water. For some reason Blood Mountain never sat well with me compared to Leviathan and Remission.

This is an excellent album, most definitely, and I like it a bit more than Blood Mountain so far. It's easier to get into, and not at the expense of Mastodon's progressive elements. And the clean vocals suck less than I would have thought.

No mention of Scott Kelly from Neurosis? Ok. Yeah this album is amazing. Much better than Blood Mountain in my book but I preferred Leviathan to BM anyways. The drummer's vocals on Oblivion are so awesome. I love when they do things slow and then the drums pick up to blow you away like in Megalodon and The Czar.

brilliant album, they managed to make a classic rock influenced record while still maintaining that Mastodon sound.

I dont think its really possible to compare it to the other albums because each one was so different. My favourite album changes every week. The vocal harmonies on CtS are something else.

:dio: megalodon is still my fav mastodon song but this really is amazing. Its exactly what I was looking for in a new mastodon album.

Have to check this out, though from the little I've heard I'm not convinced that it's better than BM, though a proper listening is required. My favourite song from them was Sleeping Giant, and the stuff I heard was quite mellow, so I hope they haven't lost all their heaviness.

I am going to reluctantly check this out, but I pretty much guessed it'd have a ridiculously high rating. Don't know what you all see in this band, but I will have a looksie yet again with this album.

If you haven't checked this one out, it is really worth it. So much different than their previous works yet still a recognizable part of their progression.

I'm a big fan of their two previous albums. But for whatever reason I haven't been able to get into this album yet.

It could end up like Tool's Lateralus and take me a long time for it all to sink in before I realize its brilliance, or it might just not be as good. We'll see.

I'm having the same problem. I've only listened to it two times or so since I bought it the other day. I like what I'm hearing, but it hasn't resonated with me like Blood Mountain did after a couple listens.

Great album and the logical progression from BM. The only flaw (as with all of their albums) is that Sanders has never been the greatest vocalist but the wider variation of lead vocalist and cleaner vocals do add more depth than the guttural grunts of Remission and Leviathan, which is an improvement. Certainly contender for album of the year,

Fuck, this is awesome. Better than anything they've ever done before.
