Still haven't heard all of this, just a few random songs, but they were good. Can't really make a proper judgement based on that though. This should remind me to check the rest out.

Had a few listens to the whole thing. It has a much more depressive feel than the rest of his work, the tracks are mellow, whilst still retaining the more loud and rockier sound from Antichrist. My favourite tracks were the title track and 'The Last Day On Earth'.

I actually REALLY like this album.
I had never really gotten into manson other than the singles i've heard, but Dan really likes MM and showed me this album.
I'm really feeling it.

I'm not quite sure why everyone is saying this is depressive. Some of the songs are sure, but there are just as many songs that are obnoxious cock rock tracks (not that that's a bad thing, but I'm just saying... That's not exactly depressive.).

I never understood how people could enjoy Manson. Granted, I have only heard this album, and I think whatever their debut is and Smells Like Children ( I never went out of my way to listen, but an old friend was a huge fan. ).

I just feel his music is too simplistic, both in the actual music and the message.

Dunno, not my kinda thing. Don't hate the guy or anything.

As much as I like brian, he is a lousy musician with nothing to offer really.

Smells Like Children is brilliant. Get the whole Roald Dahl/childrens books parody behind it? I don't see his music as being simplistic at all, but I guess opinions will differ.

Anyways, I put this cd back on after a while and my appreciation for it grew even more. Now someone just needs to review Antichrist Superstar.

See, if we're reviewing Manson I don't see why reviewing Korn is a problem.

I'm really just worried about prejudice. That said, the Manson review is nowhere near as deep-delving as a Manson review could or should be.

I've always been baffled with the Simplistic Music = Bad Music crowd. It's stupid. What happened to just caring about good tunes? The same people that will trash one band for being simplistic will do so wearing a fucking Bad Religion shirt. Lame.

As for Manson, I dig him. And I really dig this album. Not a classic by any means, but a solid 75/80. Not sure he'll ever be able to top the debut for me, though. That fucker is awesome!

And stop talking about Manson's "singing." He's not a singer.

Not to mention that you can be interesting while simplistic, and that it's fucking hard to write a good album that's also "simple".

Listening to Portrait of an American Family now. Awesome indeed (I hope that's the debut, otherwise acute embarrassment on my behalf).

Kinda like Davild Lee Roth, he's more of an entertainer singing than a singer per sé.

Exactly. Manson is far more of an entertainer, an artist, than a musician or vocalist.

And yes, Portrait is the debut. Major label, at least.

Yes he isn't a singer because he sucks at singing he's more show than anything.

If it wasn't for his controversial attitude I doubt for a second he would be famous as he is now because he surely can't carry a tune if his life depended on it.

Because *insert random black metal grunter" can? I don't see how his singing is any different than a lot of distorted "true" metal vocalizing. What he does with his voice requires a certain ability. You sing like that and then you'll be able to diss him.

Well, Christina Ricci doesn't like him. And that's what really matters.

Holy shit, that's actually the first time I've listened to the entirety of the last track of Portrait, and fuck, those baby crying sound are creepy as hell!

Black and death metal vox are designed to add intensity and atmosphere into their perspective niche. They don't claim to be great singers they are designed to sound dark and angry.

Manson never claimed to be a great singer either, and he puts a good deal of emphasis on the atmosphere too.
