This album filled me with nebulous dread whenever my parents played it way back when... I remember the original with the gatefold of the upside down cross with the poem inscribed therein, and the olive green Warner Bros. center label.
The use of the "diabolus in musica" was actually forbidden by the Vatican, if I recall correctly.
What more to say? A classic in every sense.
Good work, and a very pleaasant surprise for a Monday morn.

I've read that the label, Vertigo, added that without consulting the band, which pissed them off as they didn't want to be known as Satanists. Not sure if that's true.

Yeah, I heard that, too.

"Still falls the rain,
the veils of darkness shroud the blackened trees,
which, contorted by some unseen violence,
shed their tired leaves, and bend their boughs
toward a gray earth of severed bird wings.

Among the grasses, poppies bleed before a gesticulating death,
and young rabbits, born dead in traps,
stand motionless, as though guarding the silence
that surrounds and threatens to engulf
all those that would listen.

Mute birds, tired of repeating yesterdays terrors,
huddle together in the recesses of dark corners,
heads turned from the dead, black swan
that floats upturned in a small pool in the hollow.

There emerges from this pool a faint, sensual mist,
that traces its way upwards to caress the feet
of the headless martyr's statue
whose only achievement was to die too soon,
and who couldn't wait to loose.

The cataract of darkness forms fully,
the long black night begins, yet still
by the lake a young girl waits.
Unseeing she believes herself unseen, she smiles faintly
at the distant tolling bell, and the still falling rain."

Released on a Friday, February, the 13th, 1970, no less.

This album is all kinds of perfect. My favourite album of all time. One time a few summers ago, my uncle and I were driving around in his jeep. It was a hot day and we decided to do some offroading. We drank several beers and cranked this baby. Ever since then it has been my favourite album of all time. It's so god damn heavy and awesome.

Great review Adam, one of the most important metal albums ever it may not be metal as we know it today but it clearly set the foundations.

Without a doubt, one of my favorite albums. Every track creates an atmosphere that is unmatchable. Evil Woman is a great song for anyone who hasn't heard it.

You're not missing much, it's a bit lightweight and feels mega out of place.

You might be right, I may have heard the original or another band's cover of it, but I have definitely never heard the Sabbath version.

Now I'll really date myself:

I remember owning this on cassette and playing it so much that I believe I burned through 3 copies on cassette until CD's finally became available. It's the quintessential metal album.

Long live 'Old Man Metal' :D

I find it to be a cool track. Definitely a lighter tone but still good.
