I like her boots, but they must take ages to tie up.

Fucking hell, China:

Quote:
Man pushes would-be suicide off bridge

BEIJING (Reuters) – A Chinese man was pushed off a bridge by an angry passer-by after his threat to commit suicide held up traffic for five hours, Chinese media reported on Saturday.

Retired soldier Lian Jiansheng, 66, broke through a police cordon and reached out to shake the hand of would-be jumper Chen Fuchao before shoving him off the bridge.

"I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish. Their action violates a lot of public interests," Lai was quoted as saying by the China Daily newspaper.

"They do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to raise the relevant government authorities' attention to their appeals."

Chen, 2 million yuan ($293,200) in debt because of a failed building project, fell 8 metres (yards) onto a partially inflated emergency air cushion and was hospitalized with wrist and back injuries. Lai was detained by police.

That beats the people we had here yelling 'jump!'

I saw the video of it, it was awesome. The suicidee landed on the big mattress thingy the police had set up, and the pusher got off with a warning.

This is what happens when you put the collective before the individual. I'll leave you to argue amongst yourselves whether that's a good thing or not.

Any culture that thinks it's ok to personally push a suicide must have something wrong with it. Although it would be easier for everyone if the guy had just dug a grave and then had himself buried in it, rather than doing something as grandiose and silly as jumping off a bridge. Clearly the poor guy needed attention, not some angry OAP shoving him.

Oh, ignore the first "or not" in there. This is what happens when you re-write posts without paying full attention. Fixed now.

Reading reactions to the story, it's surprising how many people think Ledger Mcpushy was right to do what he did. Put it down to some kind of faux-misanthropic posturing I suppose.

Surely it's a sign of ultra-individualistic behaviour, i.e. me getting somewhere on time is more important than someone else's life.

The phrase "Their action violates a lot of public interests" sounds like the work of a man believing he is acting in the interests of the public a a whole, no?

Not really, sounds like self-justification to me.

Perhaps he rationalised it that way, but in order to act like that he would have to be pretty pissed off. And people don't get pissed off "in the public interest", they get pissed off because they personally are being inconvenienced.

The guy climbed all the way up on this high-ass bridge piece at the risk of his own life to talk to the guy and then throw him off the bridge, where he landed directly in the big cushion thing the police had set up, I saw the footage.

Really not that bad.

I don't agree with pushing him off of the bridge, but he is right about the not being serious about it and just wanting attention thing. Since he was up there for 5 hours he clearly had no real intention to do it, he just wanted a spectacle. Usually if someone really wants to end their life, they just climb up the bridge and get on with it. Morbid I know, but true.

Back. DC was pretty cool. Looked at a lot of the museums and stuff. I also had a buffalo burger for the first time. Buffalo meat is excellent.
