I'm pretty sure the average is what counts for the salary cap

You are correct, but the cap hit is the average salary of the entire contract. Therefor it will not change, even after he's traded.

This Heatley situation is hilarious. Apparently he's sleeping on his decision to join the Oilers. Funny how someone can demand a trade and still exercise his No Trade Clause.

Not too happy about the potential of having Both Bouwmeester and Heatley now in the Western Conference. It's so hard for an up and coming team to grab a playoff spot.

8 spots available

Locks: Sharks, Wings, Hawks
VERY likely: Canucks, Flames, Ducks

That leaves two spots. If Edmonton grabs Heatley they're very likely to get one of them. Which means one spot left with some very competitive teams left! Stars, Blues, Wild, Preds... Ugh.

I'm not too sure how I feel about this transaction...

Huh.... Gainey, I'm becoming less and less convinced you know what you're doing. Gomez is an expensive and inconsistent player... Did I mention he's expensive? And that you have 11 UFAs to deal with? And that he's on a 6 year contract and that unless he exceeds expectations, it will be impossible to deal him to another team?

apparently his contract averages to 6.7 million for the rest of his contract so it isn't as bad as first reported. Still not convinced he'll be the impact player we're searching for.

Doesn't matter, the cap hit will remain the same at 7.4 or whatever million bucks.

Absolutely BRUTAL trade for Montreal. Sorry, but they're out of their minds. I'm pissed someone actually helped the Rangers with their salary cap woes and didn't let them pay for offering such ridiculous contracts. Not only that, Montreal actually gave up big assets to get the deal done! A young forward with upside and their best prospect. I'm completely blown away.

Ya, Gainey is goddamn insane. I really have no idea what possible plan they could have now; and of course, because Gainey has been pursuing a big center at all costs (which he's still failed to get), we now have (since the free agent day has been reached) 11 fucking UFAs. Gainey did nothing, and now by the end of today, all 11 of those players could be gone and all the planning of the last five years will have gone out the window. AND WE GAVE UP OUR BEST PROSPECT SO THAT THE RANGERS COULD BE RID OF A CONTRACT THEY DIDN'T WANT. AAAAAARGH.

Oh, and Heatley's a douche.

So we re-signed Erik Cole today, and it doesn't surprise me thinking of what he stated in the exit interview. His family was gonna settle in Carolina anyway and he was willing to take a pay-cut so. A little surprised he wasn't signed earlier. Now sign LaRose and all is well, though I'd like a more competent winger than Cole on the first line as well as some D-man. Looking to Montreal for that. Babchuk will most likely disappear into the Russian minors, the stupid kid, so we might need someone to fill in for both him, and seeing that Seidenberg leaves, and Kaberle being shit, yeah we need a D.

Spacek, Hal Gill and Mike Cammalleri signed with Montreal.

Bob Gainey's been pretty active so far. Now let<s hope they can sign Tanguay, Beachemin, or Kovalev.

NOOOOOOO! The Leafs signed Komisarek! Fuck! Why cruel world? I knew Komi was a goner, but out of all the teams, why them???????

Otherwise... Montreal has had a pretty good day. Spacek is a great point defenceman, and Gill, while not amazing, will at least help alleviate Komisark's departure. And Cammalleri's a great player; my only concern is that we're paying him too much and that we won't have enough money to resign Kovalev, Tanguay, Lang and Schneider (at this point, I'm just sadly assuming that Koivu is a goner).

Trust me Komisarek is overated. He's not a top 4 Defense player. Yes he hits hard, yes he blocks a lot of shots but thats about it. Spacek is better all around and costs less.

True with the costs less, but I do think that Komi is a pretty remarkable player- I'm happy with Gainey's picks today, but I was more freaked out by Komi becoming a Leaf than anything. But hey, if he wants to not win the Stanley Cup, more power to him.

According to SportsNet, the trade has happened. Dany Heatley is now a Edmonton Oiler.

Apparently, Heatly refused the trade, he has a non trade clause....

Thanks tips!

Go to hockeybuzz.com and read what people are saying about him. It is ridiculous. People on there were saying that after Koivu left he would be the next Habs captain, now he is over payed garbage. I don't get it.

He's got leadership, big hits and is good at blocking shots. His defensive skills while playing 5 on 5 aren't that great. You'll see for yourself this season, He's not a top 3 defense player maybe a 4th or 5th. So obviously 4.5 million is a lot for the type of player he is. Kubina who you guys just traded is better defensively although not as physical.

I certainly hope that Kubina is not better defensively. He is not so great at that.

I can't wait for the season to start to see who was the best pick-up.

Even though Glen Sather is a complete idiot, he did a good job over the last 2 days. Traded Scott Gomez for Marian Gaborik, Chris Higgins and Ryan Mcdonaugh (spelling?). Pretty damn good job right there if you ask me.

Yeah. I'm mad at the Canadiens for bailing them out. Though it will be funny watching them try to score when Gabs get injured.

I see Habs fans being excited about their signings, I don't understand it. Gomez, Cammalleri, Gionta is supposed to be better than Tanguay, Koivu, Kovalev? It's not even close. Unless Kovalev signs at a discount and Price stands on his head next season, they will be bottom feeders.

Just like the Kings

Oh, I can't believe the TSN panel thought the Kubina/Exelby trade was a good move for the Leafs. Unless you look at it as a pure salary dump. Exelby is a third pairing guy at best. Don't know if the other pieces involved was anything significant though.

Gomez is a better and younger center than aging Koivu .
Cammelleri is a better goal scorer than Tanguay who's a great playmaker but just didn't fit in Gainy's plan. Gionta's a good goal scorer who doesn't have Kovalev's skills but on an average of 82 games probably plays better. Kovalev plays when he feels like it someting like one game over 4. All the new Habs players are quick skaters which will speed up Montreal's game in my opinion.

On paper it may not seem we got better yet, but we certainly didn't get worse and apparently Bob is still out for another defense player. Who knows what he'll come up with.

I think all five players we signed are quality (except maybe Gill), and have the potential to play extremely well- I've always been a fan of Gionta, and Cammelleri is definitely a great player, though I wish we got all for a lower price, especially Gomez. But I'm wary of the reports that Gainey only tried to resign two of our UFAs- Kovalev and Komisarek. I have no idea why he wouldn't at least want players like Tanguay and Lang; I'm also frightened by the prospect, if Kovalev doesn't sign with us, that the vast majority of our top two lines will be new players. Gionta and Gomez might have good chemistry from the NJ days, but it's a pretty big risk, and pretty much destroys a lot of what the Habs were building on, especially if Gainey isn't going to resign some of those third and fourth line players. This could all backfire very easily.
