Is Red Faction the 'everything is destroyable!!11' series? Played the first, of course, only certain things are blow-uppable. This any better?

Yeah, everything is certainly destroyable from what I can tell so far, and they do make that claim on the back. I only played the first one (FPS, right?), and I think this one is much better so far. Sledgehammer destruction FTW.

Battery in the cartridge? Whatcha talkin bout willis? As long as the Gameboy works, right?

It's a battery that keeps the clock running 24/7 in the game cartridge In a lot of the old G/S cartridges, there has been an issue of the battery that keeps that clock going running out. When that happens, the game can't keep its own time when it's not on, so save files are pretty much null and void.

Ah, that sucks. Well mine is still working, fortunately...just beat the Elite 4 today. One-hit KO'd a Pokemon 5 levels higher than mine with type advantage... I'm kinda tired of it now, though, since I spent like two hours just leveling up my guys so I could take the Elite 4. Still fun though :P

And Goat, you might be thinking of Mercenaries with that "EVERYTHING IS DESTRUCTABLE" theme. Dunno about Red Faction, though.

I haven't bought it, obviously. But I did join a site called game access which is Canadas version of game fly, and it is on my list. When I get it, which shouldn't be too long from now, I will let you know.

I don't remember whether or not I ever mentioned this, but I bought Suikoden Tierkreis for the Nintendo DS. A very nifty and underrated RPG IMO. I'm especially impressed that a DS game card can handle so much voicework.

Managed to download a copy of Half Life 2. Holy shit, this game is paranoia inducing. So fucking frightening.

Some recent-ish version of Civilization.

I don't get it... I build a city, then wait for god knows how long for it to get bigger? Then what happens?

You build a city, get a worker to build some roads, mines and irrigation around it, build improvements like temples, granaries, courthouses, etc to increase the immigration influx, then eventually start producing either military units to increase your "power" points or focus on expansionist units like settlers to build more cities, or just leave it on "wealth" so that it generates money to spend on your cultural budget.

Yeah, I love Civilization. Today I wiped out an entire nation in like 20 turns.

I can't tell how to work out how fast my cities are growing... and everything goes so slow. I start a worker building roads, and it's like- ok, just click next turn four times, in which nothing happens. Then I realise that's like 100 years in game-time. And what do I have to show for it? a tiny fragment of road, which increases the pace at which I inch across the map very, very, slightly. And any useful building looks like it takes about 40 turns to build...

I probably need some time to get into it.

So build more workers and have them make the roads simultaneously. If you've got three workers in one spot it'll take one turn to build the road there.
Building speeds increase as your city grows. The first few buildings will take some time (and once you start founding new ones, separate from your capital, it'll take 60 turns to build a simple granary), but after 2 improvements it starts to get better (20, 10 turns for an improvement). It is really slow though, I agree. I always end up in 2050 with the forced retirement when I've just gotten to building railroads. CivIII is a great game though, it's one of my alltime faves. I should hunt down a copy of CivIV, too.

Your city grows in population based on the amount of grain it recieves- you up your grain by building farms around your city. It's production is determined by the amount of production units it recieves (essentially mines). Of course, it gets a lot more complicated than that, with specialists and wonders and all, but it's a good place to start. Look at your city screen to map out which squares you want to use (ie, whether you want to focus on cottages which give wealth, farms which give grain and mines which give production).

There are no farms in Civ III, unless I've been missing a huge part of the game. I find building mines around the cities (or irrigating rivers) ups the population pretty decently.

Now you can go back to Kanto!

I confess: I've never played a Civilization game before. :(

Although my Operating Systems professor last semester was a fan of the series (she had Civilization III GOTY Edition on her work laptop).

Ahh, I thought we were talking about Civ IV (which you should definitely try- it's awesome, and very cheap now). I never played Civ III though, so I don't know how it compares.

I bought a copy for windows when I still had my old PC, but I can't use it for the mac. Luckily Civ is one of the few games that makes its own versions for the mac.

Cheers dudes, I'll give relentless mine-building and river-irrigating a whirl and see if it gets me further.
