This is essentially it. Seminars are for much smaller groups of people than regular lectures (usually 5-15), focus on a specific topic or theme, and place much more emphasis on the student than the professor; lots of discussion, lots of readings, and usually a large essay to write.

But you're in Canada, so that doesn't apply.

Really what else could you do with a degree in the Classics besides work at a museum. I doubt there is heated competition for professorships in the Classics. I could be wrong, though.

Oh, I know that there's nothing else to do, besides maybe become a teacher at a lower college level, which is something I might consider. But there is lots of competition for Classics; probably nowhere near as much as for say philosophy, but the fact that there are much fewer positions leads to a pretty competitive environment, and its reccomended that you go to them fancy schools. Which would probably mean I'd have to leave Canada at some point, which is the sad.

Brahm, you're at McGill University (one of the Top 3 schools in Canada). As long as you have a solid GPA, good GRE scores (contact whatever schools interest you about whether or not you need to take the Subject GRE to get into them) and fairly unique college resume, I don't think you'll have any trouble getting into a good PhD program.

last fucking semester of high school, which means absolute minimum effort:

World Literature (bleh... required)
Advanced Video Production
AP Calculus AB
AP Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism
Intro to Psychology
AP Chemistry

I give at least a little effort in calc and physics because they interest me, but other than that... well... I'm pretty much done.

i just wanted to say that i'm quite enjoying the seminar on Africa, Brazil and China. about a third of the lectures were on development and it turned out that those were the ones i enjoyed the most.

if you get a chance to take subjects on development, i strongly suggest that you do.

I did modules on development during my MA; yeah, it was really interesting. By far the best was the one hour (only one hour, for shame!) we spent on labour and development. Was only one lecture but it must have inspired me as now I seem to be doing a PhD on transnational labour movements...

Am pretty restless at the moment though... haven't been able to concentrate on my lit reviews since christmas, for some reason.

Just signed up for next Fall:

Marx and Marxism
Existentialism
Applied Calculus I
Urban Society or Individual in Society
Metaethics or The Darwinian Revolution

I plan on getting a dorm next year. It'd help if I got a place downtown for my senior year. Classes are too hard to schedule when I have to drive an hour to get there.

Summer classes:

Intro to Oral Communication
Global Economics

Just a couple classes I need to take... for the credits. I can't wait until the Fall semester, though, so I can be in the Jazz Ensemble.

biology 1
survey of anglo-saxon romantic lit

all aboard the massive career change train! whoo whoo!

1st trimester:
Negotiation - to complete a requirement
Applied Corporate Governance

2nd trimester:
Corporate Strategy
Sustainable International Business and Development - sounds very interesting and the professor used to teach at INSEAD, a leading business school, this ought to be fun.
Modelling Business Decicions - a bit like Operations Research, which i had as undergrad and loved, nice.

full semester:
Foundations of Marketing Planning - mandatory, ugh.
Advanced Negotiation Dynamics - mandatory and exclusive for some 30 students

Fall semester:

Advanced Latin: Livy
Intermediate Greek: Reading Greek
Ancient History Seminar (part I): Constitutions in Greek City States
Honours Reading Course in Latin (part I)

Winter semester:

Advanced Latin: Satire
Intermediate Latin: Historians
Intermediate Greek: Poetry
Honours Reading Course in Latin (part II)
Ancient History Seminar (part I): Constitutions in Greek City States

So yep, this year is going to suck, what with the shitloads of Greek and Latin and only one history course (though a year long seminar). Still, at least in fall I only have four classes, and the Honours Reading Course is mainly independent with very little class time, so hopefully that'll help.

Woah, pretty hardcore. What are you thinking of doing for a living?

My schedule for my first semester in college:

Comparative Literature
Calculus III
Spanish Level III
Global Culture and the Individual

Spanish and Calc are going to suck but they're really all I'm going to have to deal with...Global Culture ends with a 3-week trip to Georgia and Azerbaijan. Going to be awesome :dio:

I was going to register for my classes yesterday but then the website was all "lol you have to apply for re-admission!" I hope this doesn't fuck up my ability to go to school in the fall >_<

I'm probably going to be going for a Masters in Ancient History and hopefully doing something in teaching- we'll see if I end up PHDing it or not, though. Unfortunately, my program is only three years and is crazy language intensive,- and since I didn't know any Latin or Greek before I started it, it all got packed into this last year so I could build up on the intro courses. It'll be shitty, but hopefully after I'll be much better at both.

And that trip sounds awesome. What kind of stuff will you be doing there?
