on a totally unrelated note, i was at the beach yesterday and i saw this black kid with waterwings and a life vest and shit, and he looked like 8 or something. i thought to myself 'man, black people dominate athletics and sports like football and basketball, but why on earth aren't there any famous black swimmers?'. seriously, why?

Are there are any famous white swimmers? The only one I know is that Michael Phelps chap and then only because of that funny GIF I saw of him. Swimming isn't exactly a sport renowned for its celebrities; I'm sure if you did a google you'd find that there were black swimmers out there.

Apart from what Zad said, maybe it's an evolutionary consequence? Running was probably more important a skill to develop for people living in Africa than swimming. Not much water in the Sahara, and with all the deadly fish in the jungles I don't know how much of a viable transportation method swimming would be.
