These guys have never disappointed me. Even the more melodic stuff is still quality material. I've been looking forward to hearing this album. The Toxic Touch was amazing.

Swedish and Black influences are strong? Does that mean it sounds a little like Bloody Blasphemy?

bloody blasphemy is my favorite album as well and I consider this one their second best. much faster than i expected with the melody still present. all the songs are of the same very good quality which is a bonus. none of the songs are weak in my opinion. One of the best albums of the year. And something I did not expect is the presence of clean vocals which however are really really good and add to the song. No survivors especially slays!

Pretty decent so far, but I'm already getting slightly bored. Maybe I'll spin the rest of the album here sometime soon. Probably will be something I hang on to, but just for a track or two here and there.

The clean vox are epically awesome. This album is pretty damn good.

Finally got a chance to listen to this (own every GD album), and I completely agree with Zad's assessment. Interestingly enough, even our fav songs are the same: Poison Fog, Fallen Empires, title track and Under a Darkening Sky for me.
But my booklet says that the clean vocs are provided by one Marco van der Velde of The Wounded (no idea who that is), not Sattler himself, and it is supposed to symbolize the voice of the soldiers, suffering and fallen. The lyrics on this album is pure Erich Maria Remarque in their description of WWI horror.

Erich Marcia Remarque has probably the best book on WWI in All Quiet. I'll have to look into the lyrics.

I guess I was one of the few that enjoyed The Toxic Touch, ;)

I will take a look at this, hopefully the lyrics have improved. I
found them to be just horrible previously...

I think I liked Toxic Touch more, personally. I don't really listen to them all that often, but it'll come up on my Winamp every now and then.

I liked Toxic Touch more too, catchier tunes I think. Recently saw these guys live in a really small venue, they put on a pretty good show and played a bunch of songs from Into The Lungs Of Hell and Toxic Touch, the two albums I really enjoyed by them.

Don't get me wrong, I did not say in my review for Toxic Touch I did not like it, but felt GD was one step away from going overly commercial after that (cathcy tunes = slippery slope). Passiondale is NOT a step in that direction.

How are catchy tunes a slippery slope?

Hmm, something like, catchy tunes will make them sound better on the radio, and more radioplay will make my records sell better, and then I am more concerned with sales/radioplay to please the crowd, and all of sudden all I write is catchy tunes. Not that it is a bad recipe, in fact if you are trying to build a band with a broad commercial appeal it is about the main way to go.

I don't know if I agree with that, I saw Toxic touch as slightly more of a mainstream grab but it still had a lot of the power that their older albums had. Still not a bad release from them in 2009, a hell of a lot better then the new Nile.
