Interesting op. piece.

Aha, the "hey why bother!" argument.

You could just as easily say of corporations that used slave labour two hundred years ago "it's pointless complaining about the morality because corporations aren't moral. And besides, we need them to sell us stuff and slaves need them for employment".

He wasn't saying that at all, from what I could tell.

Quote:
The outcry about the Cadbury sale and the recruitment of child marketers reveals a deep-seated naivety in our approach to the companies we give money to. We should save our breath – our disapproval means nothing to them unless we stop buying their stuff or make what they do illegal.

The last bit's the important one; he's saying stop whining pointlessly and realise that they're heartless bastards.

Quote:
Ultimately I'm arguing for cynicism. We should at least try to withhold our emotions from the corporations we trade with. They don't deserve our fondness, our hatred or, crucially, our trust. Let's save all that for people. It would solve a lot of problems: we wouldn't need to ban confectionery commercials, or repackage Harvey's Bristol Cream with a big picture of cirrhosis on it, because we'd already suspect products' claims. We'd stop assuming that everything was safe unless marked "dangerous".

We need big corporations – they employ us, they sell us things, they make money for our pensions – but they need us more. They're only robot tradesmen and they should know their place.

Makes sense to me.

Of course we take you seriously! Why else would, say, trapt, rio or me bother arguing instead of just saying 'stfu Fridge'? You're not Noodles, stop acting like him. And post that list.

 Poor noodlz.

Alright, here goes.
1) I'm tall (1.97). Women using my sperm in Lugano are more likely to be Italians. These are a short people. A tall person has a physical advantage.
2) I have a relatively high IQ (13-something, can't remember). IQ is genetic to a certain extent.
3) I have relative symmetry in my face and generally pleasing aesthetic lines.
4) My body type is conducive to good musculature and decent weight. The fact that I have love handles and a beer gut is simply because I'm a lazy sonofabitch.
5) My hands and fingers are long and versatile- any son of mine would have a better-than-average shot at being a decent musician.
6) Half of my family is Jewish, so should he ever need financial aid of any sort I'd be more likely to be able to give it to him. ;)

Eh, mayhap. It is true that I read that whilst watching Neighbours and as such had more important matters on my mind.

Nonetheless it's still a bit "what can you do?" for me. You can either "withhold our emotions from corporations", or you can request better from them.

Heh. He is a comedian, of course, so it's all taken with a pinch of salt, but I think the "stop buying their stuff or make what they do illegal" bit is more important than you're giving credit for.

A  for Fridge. Noodles' loss is the forum's gain.

I liked Bill Evans approach to this problem and that you should approach big things realistically and do the small, simple, possible stuff. He was talking about music... but yeah.

You're going to financially support 100s of kids produced from your single instance of jerking it?

No, but I'll give them the secret of financial happiness. Take business classes in college.

Ummmm business degrees are the most heavily saturated degree within the job market. I don't think it'd get them anywhere.

Better than a philosophy degree. My dad screwed us over nicely with that one. Cool, you're a genius with a PhD in philosophy of music from Oxford. What job other than giving seminaries in Conservatories can you find?

With a business degree you can get a job in human resources or something... with a philosophy degree you can think. I know which I prefer!

Nobody gets paid to think.

I plan on being a professor. Or I could go to law school. Law school wouldn't pay any measly bills now would it? I'm siding with Rio on this. I'd rather be poor than be dumb.

You don't need a philosophy degree to not be dumb. But it would be nice to have a decent job. Anyway, I should be ok, if I applied for a philosophy course it's a joint bachelors with politics or international relations.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say philosophy programs in the states are the only ones that actually teach students to think critically. Thinking critically equals being not dumb.

Apart from academics!

Really, though, thinking hard about stuff is a transferable skill that can help you get all kinds of jobs. Whereas something very career-orientated means you are at the mercy of supply and demand in that particular field. And if it's business studies the "supply" side is probably going to be high.

Maybe I'm just making excuses for people taking philosophy degrees, but if it gives you a really strenuous mental workout, more people should do it, IMO, even if it isn't directly relevant to any career paths except wearing a black polo neck and sitting in a coffee shop.

Tbh I don't see how politics or international relations are going to make you any more employable.

You should do industrial relations. If there's one thing the world needs more of it's industrial relations graduates!

I've talked to a couple business majors and it sounds like the least pleasant thing in the world to do, and half of them were incredibly lame people.

As if just because one doesn't have a higher education, they are "dumb"... lot of over-educated idiots walking around, lined up at the unemployment office.
I can teach a parrot to repeat things, does that make it "smart"?

It's easy to say things like "I'd rather be poor than be dumb", until you are actually living in poverty, that is.
