It was his opinion, a dissenting one but nonetheless just an opinion on the news. It wasn't an ad hominem attack on a guy who has good taste in metal like Orion's post. Honestly who the fuck cares what he listens to outside of that.

I asked a question, hardly an ad hominem attack.

Anyways, I got into metal through Metallica. I listened to S&M one time and fell in love. From there I just started to explore and continue to do so. I found this site back about 6 or 7 years ago and it has helped tremendously.

It started gradually from listening to Linkin Park and Slipknot, and moved on to God Dethroned, Mayhem, Moonspell, Rotting Christ, Slayer, and Kreator. I was in high school at the time and I adored those bands, from then on I branched out into hardcore and death metal, and those two genres are still my favorites.

What is it about you coming to noodles' rescue all the time?
He handled it well enough without you swooping in from the chandelier to whisk him from the jaws of peril.

I wish I was that epic. I think I just like being in arguments. I'll have to ponder on this.

Very interesting reading. It's great to see how we all came about finding metal and how it chaged our lives.

As for me:

Pre 1988:

Born in 1977, I grew up surrounded by my dad's music. 60's, 70's rock 'n' roll, CCR, The Eagles, etc. When I was old enough to have an interest in the radio, I formed my own musical tastes at the time (basically 80's pop).

My brother, who is 3 years older was just starting to get into metal. From tape trading he was into the typical metal bands at the time (Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, WASP, Slayer, MOD, AC/DC, etc, etc).

As his room was next to mine, I could hear this noise which was metal coming through the walls. I remember banging on the wall, telling him to turn that crap down, lol.

1988:

One day, when my brother was out, curiosity got the better of me and I went into his room to look over this collection of metal that he had. I picked up one of his tapes - it was Metallica's "...And Justice For All".
I played it on my dad's massive hifi unit with the huge speakers. I sat there, listening and I don't know why at the time, but I loved it. And at that moment, I was a converted metalhead.

Soon I was gathering up everyhting that my brother had and listening to it, whatever it was. So now I was a fan of AC/DC, Anthrax and Metallica, and to a lesser extent, Megadeth and Slayer.

1992-1993:

While at high school, I got my next dose of heavy metal from trading tapes with fellow metalheads. On these tapes I found and got into bands like Sepultura, Bio Hazard, Pantera, Iron Maiden and Fear Factory. Also, around the same time, my musical tasted evolved and I enjoyed listening to rap music, such as Ice-T, Ice Cube and Cypress Hill

I also heard Black Sabbath for the first time, oddly enough on a SNES game entitled "Rock'n'Roll Racing". The song was "Paranoid".

1999:

In 1999, I bought my own PC and was thrown into the world of the internet. Although I had used the internet before, it was at either public libraries or at TAFE (Kinda like college, but not), and only used it for tertiary related things. Now that I had my own PC, I could look at anything I wanted. This is where my metal journey really took off. Now thanks to the net, a whole new world of metal was laid out in front of me - power metal, gothic metal and everything else.

Bands came in a huge flurry - Iced Earth, Primal Fear, Iron Savior, Edguy, Nightwish, Entwine, and so many more.

Even now I'm still discovering new metal bands that I never knew existed. And I still have the same excitement I had, back when I first listened to that Metallica album...

I forget if I mentioned this in my post but I also went from thinking that melodeath and progressive metal like Arsis and Opeth were the best, to then thinking that psychotic technical metal like DEP and Necrophagist was the best, to then thinking that intense super emotional stuff like Warning and Neurosis was the best, to now thinking that fun times doom/heavy/instrumental metal riffyness like Slough Feg, Trephine, and Sahg is the best.

Not really only a progression in metal tastes since nowadays in general I prefer feels good man music that sounds good rather than intense and depressed cathartic-type stuff.

I didn't listen to music at all until I was about 13/14, then I listened to Led Zeppelin and AC/DC, then I listened to Dream Theater and Iron Maiden, and then I was a metalhead. Got introduced to "extreme" stuff through Trivium and Children of Bodom.

Now I probably listen to 20-25% metal with Converge being my clear #1 favorite metal band. I feel like there's still a lot of metal out there that I would like, though, so I keep looking. Starting to get down on a few genres, though...at this point, metalcore is probably my favorite, which is a little weird to say--but it's true. People can hate on that, but I guess I usually only like metal anymore that A. is heavy, and B. has awesome riffs. Thus, power, black, tech death, and a lot of other stuff doesn't do it for me anymore. I really don't know where I'm going next with metal.

Heatseeker I agree on point B about the riffs. Metal is first and foremost about heavy and awesome riffs. I don't like a lot of metalcore because of the vocal styles but I agree the riffs are there.

It's also why I prefer old school DM ala Carcass or Bolt Thrower or Gorefest than the modern stuff ala Hate Eternal, Nile or Necrophagist with their endless blast beating.

I do like power metal and *cough* symphonic black metal *cough* though but for different reasons. Though even then Power Metal bands like Demons and Wizards and Gamma Ray have a lot of cool riffs.

It is all a matter of opinion of course and no offence was meant to those who prefer Black Metal or brutal/tech Death Metal.

I listened to mostly rock and AOR when I was a kid. Then I got into pop rock for a little bit. When Europe's TFC song hit that's where my interest in harder music started to involved.

It wasn't until 1987 when my cousin came down and brought his heavy metal collection. He put on Dokken's Under Lock And Key album and at that point I started to listen to heavy metal.
