How the fuck did that just happen! Almost 2-fucking-0!

Goddammit, the country's going wild. I'm almost sad I'm leaving for Scotland tomorrow morning.

Maradona adds some injury as well.. I don't think he's capable of handling that team very well. But we'll see.

Anyway, go Switzerland. I don't like Spain very much, ad this should get their arrogant asses down to earth. It was however not deserved in my opinion, Spain absolutely dominated, then the Swiss got a fluky goal, and the air sort of went out of Spain.

How have they been arrogant? They have spent the whole time insisting that they are not favorites and have maintained the whole time that every team is to be feared. True, today's loss was a bitter blow to la seleccion, but I think this was the wakeup call they needed. They will take it out on poor Honduras.

Arrogance..bah. Just because the team has received a lot of press and is widely considered one of the best doesnt make them arrogant. You should judge them based on what others say. True they have spoken confidently about themselves in the press, but always with a touch of humility.

I second. Spanish media is very arrogant, but the players and trainers aren't arrogant at all. Pique, for example, declared after the match "Let's see if this loss ends with all that nosense that we're favs."
That's not being arrogant, imo.

Yeah I know, the only players I really dislike is Villa and Torres, BUT, it's the media I'm talking about mainly, not the players. I've always thought Spain is slightly overrated, and that they should get over that EC-championship they won, because the WC will be a MUCH tougher challenge.

To be fair, the EC arguably is a much more difficult tournament as in the World Cup you are apt to encounter many toothless teams. In general, Europe does not have many teams that are just altogether bad.

The average quality is higher in Europe obviously, but you are more likely to get Brazil or Argentina in the final 16 and onwards so I think it makes the world cup a bit harder.

I mean, could Greece have won the EC with their "line up everyone in front of the goal and hope to score from a free kick" tactic? Not against a good attacking team like Brazil.

Well with a greater shit-great ratio in the WC as opposed to the EC, it all boils down to ending up in an easy group.

I think the EC is much more interesting from a historical perspective.

Loved the way the mexican team played tonight. True that a sucky french team helped them a lot.

i was pretty surprised by Mexico's display. their previous friendlies, except the one vs Italy, and the first match were quite bad.

France is just terrible, facepalm. they tried the offside trap and got fucked.

what Green was thinking when the USA scored:

I wan't surprise by Mexico's play, they are very talented, I was surprised by Mexico productivity, usually all that midfield excellent play can't produce goals. But I don't think Uruguay or Mexico could get into semifinals.
France sucked, as expected. With Blanc, next WC will be different.

I don't think I can ever complain about NBA refs again. These soccer refs are horrendous.

Who were the refs favoring?

Should I really be excited that the USA clawed back to earn a lucky tie against a team from a country 150 times smaller in population?

The refs were favouring Slovenia.

Anyway, the US played absolutely horribly in the first half, and the way they pulled themselves back up was beautiful football.

Woot!

Time for some itinerant sportsmen named "Lamps", "Stevie G" and "Wazza" to caper around with some Algerians in the name of St. George and for our amusement.

I'm optimistic about this match, though not the tournament as a whole. My prediction: 3-0 England, precipitating a rush of excitement and optimism that will carry into a good performance against Slovenia before being horribly delfated in the last 16.
