That wasn't hitting on. That's how I am with everyone.

In sainted Albion, meanwhile, posho Tory MP and enviro-mentalist Zac Goldsmith is in trouble over election expenses, and he was hilariously defensive in a Jon Snow interview where he got completely and utterly - what's the word? Ah, raped.

Dunno if you Johnny Foreigner types can see it, but worth watching. He's like a washed-out clone of Dave Cameron. The whole clip is full of win, crazy haircuts and shifty eyes everywhere. Little Britain, everybody.

Here's his response.

Still looks like the Dick Clark of economists.

Schiff was wrong about letting everything fail, however.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9rECsp5 ... re=related

The practice of letting some companies fail, and propping up other key companies has proven right so far IMO. If AIG, Citibank and General Motors had all failed at the same time I don't think the world economy would have been better off.

The question now is long term, do companies have a healthy enough fear of failure to motivate them to avoid risk?

At any rate, other countries would have been laughing as they propped up their own institutionalized financial companies regardless.

Letting them fail might be right in the long run, but to avoid too high immediate unemployment you can't let everything collapse. Of course, that depends on political reasons as much as economic ones.

The National Tea Party Federation have expelled the fellow who wrote that thing on the page before, it's only fair to mention. He wasn't the leader of the whole thing, just one of the groups that makes up the bunch.

Well, it's not just unemployment. It's a significant portion of the insurance, savings and investments of the US. The economy would be in danger of not functioning. Imagine if Deutsche Bank and Lloyd's failed at the same time?

Well, the gubmint could guarantee the savings instead of bailing the company out directly.

David Harvey talking about stupid economics professors.

Though, he is wrong about business schools 1:09 in. I'm in a business school and I'm doing marxist theory and trade union activism :D

Quite a good talk worth watching.

Quote:
A Swiftian lecture in which Harvey introduces the talk by suggesting that Dione apologists of received wisdom are skirting the glaring fact of; The Internal Contradictions of Capital Accumulation by framing it as failure to identify systemic risk. Harvey outlines some of these apologetic genres to great rhetorical and humorous effect. I recommend this particularly to people who base their expertise on the grounds of faithful (uncritical) reading of The Economist .
This comment is so bunk. I hate when people write like this. Intellectually cryptic/elitist for its own sake. Bleh! Waiting for the Harvey to load and buffer and what not.

Me too. I don't come across this elitist style in History as much as you would in Philosophy, I would imagine, but it is still too frequent an occurrence.
