Great review! I felt the exact same about this album - I thought it sucked when I first heard it. (Still feel that way about Blizzard Beasts, though - it's the production). I too felt that the drums were awful, that it was stupid how songs ended abruptly... But then it made sense. The drums added character - it's a person playing these, not a machine. Still kind of on the fence about the random ends to the songs - Darkthrone does this on occasion as well. But, anyways, fantastic review for a fantastic black metal album - 85/100

Immortal's earlier discography grew on me but this isn't one of my favorite older albums. A lot of the tracks are kinda the same and don't really evolve into anything more than some double bass, blast beats, and fast riffage. Which isn't really a terrible thing, because it's not like the songs are horrible. So I definitely agree with what was mentioned in the review.

There's some badass tracks like Blashyrkh, though. I'd say the score is fair, maybe even generous.

Much better than Blizzard Beasts which is atrocious. Still just doesn't really do much for me.

The band has never done anything for me, though Sons of Northern darkness wasn't that bad.

I felt that way for the longest time, but one day while I was gaming I had At the Heart of Winter playing in the background and the song Where Dark and Light Don't Differ popped on and I instantly fell in love. For me this band is all about killer riffage.

I own a few Immortal albums and I love this band but I've never heard this one. Thanks for the info. Nice review.
