I looked at my games collection and noticed The Darkness. Excellent and cool fps game, not generic marine/space marine game #47338. Also awesome Mike Patton voice work!

Also haven't played it (yet) but Alan Wake is supposed to be pretty damn good.

Dead Rising is also a really cool game (sequel upcoming soon though which might be better).

I'm pretty sure you aren't into Square-Enix RPG's but the exclusives for xbox360 (Infinite Undiscovery, Star Ocean: The Last Hope and Lost Odyssey) are supposed to be good. I can vouch for Star Ocean as being worthy of say a 7.5 out of 10. Although I'm pretty sure you don't like gay JRPG's :P

He has no face.

His name is Master Chief.

He shoots guns in games with little to no story.

I actually prefer not seeing his face. It's just another little mystery to go in with the buckets of other mysteries in Halo. His face is described in The Fall of Reach book, anyway.

Master Chief is his ranking among the Spartans. He's referred to MC over his real name "John" because most people don't even view the Spartans as human beings. There's shitloads of backstory in the excellent Halo books that reveal many things that people who strictly play the games would never find out.

And little to no story? Perhaps you've never played Halo 2 / 3. The stories in those are rather complex.

Great game, but I never got past that point when you're in that chapel at the graveyard and suddenly you're flooded with agents. I usually get killed within thirty seconds.
I also made The Darkness talk as often as possible, just to hear Mike Patton.

Cause John is a very well thought-out name.

I've played Halo 3, the story was a cutscene at the start of a mission to set up a predictable A to B level.

Yeah, not especially keen on Halo myself. I'll check The Dark, Dead Rising and Alan Wake, Rhys, cheers.

Try Red Dead Redemption, it's a fuckin awesome game.

I also recommend: Batman Arkhum Asylum, Gears of War 2, Bioshock, Halo Reach (I know you said your not keen on Halo, but seriously this game is the tits and no Master Chief), Borderlands (only if you can get somebody else to play with, preferrebly 3 somebody elses), and Assassins Creed 2.

Heh, keep on hating. If something as dumb as a resemblance to Doom's Marine is keeping you from liking Halo, then your loss. I've been playing the series since it first released in 2001 and know how rich of an experience it is to get involved with; seriously, between the books and games and all other forms of media, Halo undoubtedly has the deepest storyline of any videogame series. Yes, I'm partial to the series because it's the first shooter I ever really, really liked - the first game came out when I was nine - but I also know that anyone who dislikes the series because of media over-exposure is truly missing out. There's a reason why all of the games in the series have received average scores of 9 / 10 or higher: they're awesome shooters. Halo pioneered the console shooter, taking several things that older first person shooters screwed up and making them amazing. Hell, Halo: CE made battles in fucking HALLWAYS intense. I can't think of a single thing that the first game screwed up. It's solid all-around. So yes, haters can say whatever they want, but all they'll accomplish is gaining a false feeling of smug satisfaction that they deterred the fanboys. Except, people who actually PLAY all the games and love them know that there is nothing to criticize.

I second Red Dead Redemption and Assasins Creed 2. Both are really good.

I played Halo: CE when it first came out and didn't like it. And most of Halo 3 with a friend and didn't like it. Scores mean nothing, most Final Fantasy games get 9's and above and most of them reallly don't deserve it. Not all Halo haters hate it for the reasons you stated some actually have played it and were just unimpressed. Like me.

Although if someone does hate the series simply because of media attention and such, then thats just silly.

One of the silliest posts I've ever read.

I haven't played Halo Reach or CE. But Halo 1,2 and 3 really aren't anything out of the ordinary and Halo definitely isn't the only game that has books written where the storyline continues. Big fucking deal. The only reason you're so fucking in love with the series is because, like you said, the first game came out when you were nine and you've grown up with all the hype surrounding it. And I'm not saying there's something wrong with that. One of my favourite games is Half-Life because I grew up with it. No Halo game can beat it, ever. But I do understand why younger generations don't get what is so great about it.

Anyway, I definitely don't agree with the 9/10 scores that the games have received, it's ridiculous that a game as half-assed as Halo 3 got an almost perfect score and I am certain it's because of the hype.

Eh, I just get upset when people dislike things for stupid reasons. I don't mind if someone says they dislike the games because of the gameplay or whatever, but I got the vibe that Rhys didn't like them for lame reasons such as the appearance of the characters or the way the story is laid out.

And it's rather silly of you to think that I ONLY love the games because I've been playing them for nine years. Yeah, Halo is special to me because it was the first series I really liked. But I legitimately enjoy them because they're GOOD games. I liked Linkin Park when I was eleven, but that's certainly not the case now, because I eventually realized how awful the band is. I don't hold onto things I used to love just for nostalgia's sake. If anything, I only appreciated Halo more as I got older. And believe me, I would vouch for Gears of War, Elder Scrolls, Half-Life, and several other series on a same level.

You're right though, my post was pretty ridiculous. I'm kinda in a "Take no bullshit" kind of mood today and got carried away. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I played the first Halo, and was bored. Do the sequels massively improve on it?

If you didn't like the original, then you won't like the sequels. Although I agree with DevWal, you gotta at least rent Reach.

Kicking ass at Starcraft 2 at the moment. I'm almost at diamond level and I almost always win. Feels good. It's probably going to be a nightmare to transition to the highest level though.

The appearance of the characters is part of the story. The lack of story in fact. He's a faceless character who has a generic story built around him.

I mean, Master Chief is a faceless, silent soldier......seen in every game from Doom to Quake to Half-Life to Halo.

The jive-talking black guy in Halo 3? Are you serious? Deep story and character?
