I watched part of the lady gaga concert on HBO, and you guys think i'm full of myself?

I noticed she claimed that she would never lip synch. I guess having 5 other prerecorded vocals playing while she yells at the crowd and occassionally sings during the show isn't lip synching.

Her headset mic sounded atrocious too. I would be pissed if I went to see a singer and the dancing and bullshit took precidence over the quality of the vocals.

Yep. We could go even further to say that the primary listeners of metal are white (and I guess East Asian to an extent?) heterosexual males.

Heavy Metal has always been a boys thing. After all it's violent, chauvinistic, bombastic and all those other things women in our society are not socialised to be.

Interestingly the girls I knew who were into "metal" generally didn't like the music but liked the lifestyle and imagery. Some of them were attracted to metal guys cause of the bad boy image. And they were generally quite psycho too - lots of drugs and lots of fights (and occassional arson). More so than the men who were quite timid!

Musically they liked Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson and the odd Metal ballad ala One or Nothing Else Matters.

They'd come to all the Death Metal gigs but generally didn't care much for the music. It was more about being seen to be extreme.

To this day I've never met a woman who actually loves or even likes proper Metal.

I did come from a small city so that's probably got something to do with it.

But even when I attend a concert in Melbourne or Sydney, the vast majority of the attendees are men and many of the women are girlfriends/wives. Indeed my wife comes to gigs with me.

As I said before, I don't think our socialisation processes in Australia create an environment where proper metal music is attractive to the fairer sex.

Time for a moment of humility. I was wrong.

After a half a day of what I considered to be quality practice. I listened to the recordings. There was only one problem. I've been plagued by this annoying ass tone that shows up regularly that's been fucking up my shit for years. Now I see what I was doing wrong after comparing the good stuff to the crap.

Long story short, I used to sing Death Metal all the time, and as such, there was a major problem left over from habit because of it. When a death metal singer sings, he uses a low falsetto and basically screams the same way you would whisper so his regular voice is not actually doing anything but that adding a ton of distorted sound to thicken up the way a falsetto sounds.

So basically when I was singing falsetto parts, I was using both sets of vocal chords unless it is a really hollow sounding voice because I didn't know how to make a falsetto sound full for years.

I was so excited this morning too. After a couple hours, the real falsetto starts disappearing, so I just unknowingly substitute this other voice that sounds exactly like it until I hear the recording.

I guess we can dispell some things that turned out to be untrue:

1) 8 hour a day stamina...nope. Once the falsetto is gone, it's pretty much over for the day. Yes. If I wanted to be the world's worst I could use a voice that doesn't ever tire. I looked at it on an analyzer and it even looked painful to listen to.

2) 5 octave range. I checked my range and it lost one octave that has to be falsetto.

3) can sing like anybody. I don't know about this anymore. seems like I can sing like anyone I learned to copy 5 years ago, but everything sounds like me talking that I've learned over the last couple years.

You guys were right. I made some claims that were based on really bad habit, some really old assumptions and some misunderstandings. I literally had no idea there were actually falsetto vocal folds. I thought it was something you did with the other ones.

I think the right thing to do is admit when you were wrong. I haven't lost anything other than my insanely long practice schedule. I probably lost the ability to sound like an idiotic ass that has no idea what he doing when someone hears something I sang though.

It doesn't matter about the actual composition of the audience. It's like when you're out in public, you should behave as if your grandmother is there. Nothing you wouldn't do in front of her should you do in front of other people you respect. Excusing misogyny just because women don't listen to it, according to anecdotal evidence, is loathsome. Oh, and Cincinnati's punk scene has a lot of females who are into metal as well. And IronDuchess.

Anecdotal evidence? Right. Anyone taking bets on black females as the average metal listener?

And I'm not excusing anything or anyone here; your crusader stance is just wearing thin.

There were lots of girls/womens at the Rush show last night. Ones in Dream Theater and Megadeth shirts and shiz, they can't ALL have been there because of husbands/boyfriends.

My girlfriend loves metal, especially (melo)death. When talking about metal she even acts like the stereotypical macho metalhead more often than I do! But girls such as her are definitely in the minority (even more so because she's goodlooking, unlike the majority of women I've seen at metal concerts), but they're out there. Somewhere.
