Who is "excusing misogyny"? I must have missed something, because I don't see anybody posting anything of the sort, and the fact that metal is predominantly male does not equal "misogyny".

I'm anti-misogyny and agree that dudes being friendly to ladies at metal shows would probably make ladies more conducive to showing up, but those aren't particularly dramatic/interesting viewpoints. Also don't think the lack of women interested in metal is because of misogyny, or that there's anything particularly anti-woman about metal.

100% agreed. I don't think any of us are advocating any different viewpoints.

Songs like Fucked with a Knife and Rape Camp aren't really screaming, "hey women, you're perfectly welcome in metaldom". The author cited GnR as an example amongst countless others of imagery that simply isn't welcoming to women. It's one thing to write about women like JR Hayes does comparing them to black widows or serpents then the more obligatory misogynistic lyrics and images which the author also cites still making an appearance in metal.

We've had discussions of members on here not listening to Drudkh for links to NS but we've never had discussion of people not listening to CC for comparable messages directed at women. I'm not saying anyone here is misogynistic but misogyny just isn't being addressed. Being friendly to women at shows is a pretty bogus answer to solve the issue when there are larger thematic issues.

I'll stop since I'm being soapbox-y. I just thought the article was good and that misogyny in metal is under-talked about.

Misogyny in metal is complete bullshit, while mainly males listen to the music I've and plenty of other metalheads worldwide know women that indulge in the lyrics. Also who cares if people get offended due to lyrics, it's their own meager sensibilities that deride the aural experience, if they can't get passed song titles like Addicted to Vaginal skin or She lay gutted or Slave whipping anthem whatever they may be, fuck them it's free speech. Have you ever thought about the fact that your pc bullshit, infringes on the other rights of those who create this music?

Outside of goregrind / death metal, I don't see any misogyny in metal, so really, it's a non-issue.

Rap / hip-hop, on the other hand...

Anyway, I don't agree with the idea that Metal is completely sexism-free, but nor is it the huge boys club some people make it out to be. What I'd be interested in is the reason why some substrains of metal are actually misogynistic. Is it because the musicians involved went through their entire lives being ignored by bitchy sweet sixteen types they really wanted to fuck?

Are you kidding me? More women listen to the Pet Shop Boys than Metal and that is saying something considering their audience is gay men and straight men who have horrible production-centric tastes in music.

completely agreed. right now there's a more or less serious discussion going on, but normally it's just fun and games. make it sticky and it'll be as cool as the funny internet video thread... which i never follow.
