Not much into sludge usually... but this just hits home with me. Metridium Fields (their debut) was awesome too. The only thing you didn't mention (for better or worse, depending) is that the clean vocals do sound very much like Von Till at their low points but when they hit higher notes, they borderline another vocalist from a mainstream band that (many) hate... Serj Tankian. His voice is a bit different but the intonations are uncannily familiar at points (especially the beginning of La Brea Tar Pits.

Either way, a completely awesome album that's not for everyone. Favorites of mine are definitely Sevengill and maybe Emerald Bay (which to me, sounds like something that could be on Von Till's solo outings).

Interesting, the Serj likeness didn't really occur to me. Will look out for it in future.

Also, you said "Anneke-esque" bits in Sevengill. You do realize that Anneke herself does make an appearance in the song, don't you?

That's exactly what makes Sevengill so damn awesome to me. :)

Haha!

wtf I heard it and thought it was her, and thought I'd better check it out to see if it actually was... then I forgot to.

Thanks for the correction.

Finally gave this a proper listen and totally agree with the Serj comparison. Also vaguely reminiscent of a non-schizo Unexpect. Quality stuff. Not as doomy or pessimistic as my normal sludge listens.

It's an ok album in my opinion nothing to special, the male vocals just really suck.

Why are they called "Giant Squid" yet have a starfish on the cover?

I think the cover is more related to the album concept than the band name.
