Best BM band ever, just sayin.

In the Nightside Eclipse it's their only BM album, though. That said, Anthems... is pure genius, but isn't BM, imo.

Lets not go down this road though.

This was a well-timed review, and their early material still sounds good.

His statement is correct, though.
Emperor only released one full length BM album.

I agree.

I think Wrath of the Tyrant (the ep version) is my favorite track on the ep/Demo, and push comes to shove, I prefer the Nightside versions of Keys/Wizards to the ep version. Other opinions?

Emperor's Anthems, IX and Prometheus were symphonic progressive music with advanced Black and Death Metal intertwined in it which goes back to their progressive side. Ihsahn's musical direction until now has been the very definition of an evolution of musical ideas through out an artists' mind.

Prometheus never clicked with me when I listened to the album back then. Perhaps I should listen to it again

You should, Alex. It's a complex album and takes quite a few spins to spot its brilliance.

For thinking black metal is so transgressive and Nietzschean, you purists are really into refusing to call anything black metal if it pushes the limits of the genre.

Seriously, EBD has a good point. Let's just talk about Emperor EPs, mmkay? What are As The Shadows Rise and Reverence like? Don't think I've heard them, certainly not the former...

Calm down old man, take your blood pressure pills, we all know Trapt knows about black metal as Obama knows how to run this country.

There's nothing on Reverence that isn't on Anthems... it was basically an interim release.
As the Shadows Rise is very good, you should check it if you like the demo and the ep.

I haven't listened to Emperor in a really long time... could never get into Anthems. In the Nightside Eclipse is probably my favorite non-gay USBM album, though.

As the Shadows Rise is excellent, basically three tracks from the demo: "Witches Sabbath", "Lord of the Storms", and "The Ancient Queen", all with somewhat less lo-fi production. I'm not sure if I prefer this version of Witches Sabbath to the necro version on the demo, but this version of The Ancient Queen is basically perfect, it has to be in my top 5 Emperor tracks.

I prefer the As The Shadows Rise versions. Sounds closer to the EP.
The demo is good but the rawness doesn't seem to fit very well with their composition style, I always thought.

Allow me to correct myself:
