Plane carrying KHL team crashes

Quote:
TUNOSHNA, Russia -- A Russian jet carrying a KHL ice hockey team crashed into a river bank Wednesday while taking off in western Russia, killing at least 43 people and leaving two others critically injured, officials said.

The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said the Yak-42 plane crashed in sunny weather immediately after leaving an airport near the city of Yaroslavl, on the Volga River about 150 miles northeast of Moscow.

It said the plane was carrying the Lokomotiv ice hockey team from Yaroslavl to Minsk, the capital of Belarus, where it was to play Thursday against Dinamo Minsk in the opening game of the season of the Continental Hockey League. The ministry was carrying 45 people, including 37 passengers and eight crew, and two people survived the crash.

Players from Lokomotiv of the KHL were aboard a plane that crashed on the banks of the Volga River, killing at least 43.
Slovakian forward and national team captain Pavol Demitra, who played in the NHL for the St. Louis Blues and Vancouver Canucks, was on the plane, his agent, Matt Keator, told ESPN.com. "[It's] just awful," Keator said.

Eleven foreign players were reportedly onboard the jet. A Czech embassy official said Czech players Josef Vasicek, Karel Rachunek and Jan Marek were among those killed.

It wasn't immediately clear which other players were on board the Yak-42. Officials said player Alexander Galimov survived the crash along with a crewmember.

"We are only beginning to understand the impact of this tragedy affecting the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl club and the international hockey community," the KHL said in a statement. "First and foremost, our condolences go out to the families and friends of the players, coaches and staff lost in today's tragedy.

I'm just at a loss for words right now.

Absolutely devastating news. An entire team gone... that's hard to believe.

One of the players, Stefan Liv, was probably the best Swedish non-NHL goaltender of the last decade. He backed up Henrik Lundqvist when we won the Olympic gold metal in 2006 and won the World Championship the same year. He was only 30 years old and in the prime of his career. May he and the other victims of this horrible accident rest in peace.

I've also simplified some things from last year, only stats being calculated are goals, assists, +/-, PIM, wins, shutouts, and save %. 2 centers, 2 left wings, 2 right wings, 4 d-men, 2 goalies, 1 utility, 4 benched.

my team is DevotedWalnut with the awesome flaming pink goalie helmet.

just pick Canuck players. both Sedins, Kesler, Raymond, Luongo, they could all potentially win you the pool.

If we end up with 8 teams I suggest you increase the roster sizes, because there's gonna be a ton of good players left if it's kept the way it is. I ran a league last year that had 8 teams and this is what my roster setup was:

C, C, C, LW, LW, LW, RW, RW, RW, D, D, D, D, Util, Util, G, G, G, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, IR, IR, IR, IR

what if I did 4 C, 4 LW, 4 RW, 6 D, 2 U, 2 G, 4 B ?

that's 26 players per team with at least 8 teams. Should work.

I'd love to play your game, if only I understood a thing of what you all say in this thread. The only player I know is Cristobal Huet, because they talk about him once in a while here, for some reason. Oh and Sundin, from NHL 2003 I think (or another game of that franchise).

Not Northern enough I fear.

Huet has been out of the NHL for a few years now. The league had enough french Canadians as is, no need to start letting the damn euro french in.

you should still play and learn on the fly, we need people. Myself, and most other people here can break it down for you.
