Jackson C. Frank - s/t

His voice is really good. Hearing "Milk and Honey" over the f/w 09 Number (n)ine runway show is the most excited I've been in a while.

Really digging this album after having an odd itch to listen to it last night. I never disliked the first but part two rubbed me the wrong way and I hadn't gone back to listening to Nachtmystium in a while.

The Devil's Blood - Come, Reap

Pretty solid stuff. I should probably check their full lengths out. EDIT: maybe not. They seem to use really generic and bland rhythms all the time.

I wouldn't call it bland. It's a more simplistic approach to drumming. They are very talented musicians. They really do not need complex structural rhythm patterns to deliver their musical ideas and the occult and liberation found in their emotional value (in melodies) is what really counts. They are a rare breed.

Yeah I don't doubt their talent but imo metal (and rock) needs great rhythmic ideas to make the riffs really hit home. Otherwise the songs turn into a blur for me.

Lots of sludge metal bands kinda flop for a similar reason. Like I was listening to Callisto's Noir yestereve and, while there's definitely some amazing stuff about that album (lead guitar tone on "Woven Hands", yum), a lot of the time their "riffs" are 4/4 DUN DUN DUN DUN, DUN DUN DUN DUN that's no fun at all to listen to.
