Haha, Man Shitty as well yes, what a fantastic night :D

Yeah Lille missed a metric fuckton of goals, but them have themselves to blame. Too bad Trabzonspor won't qualify for the Champions League because Moscow won though, I really like their goalkeeper.

El Clásico (or El Clàssic if you're Catalan) tonight, in Madrid, Santiago Bernabéu stadium!

My bet: 2-2. Benzema and Di Maria for Madrid, Messi x2 for Barcelona.

Betting sites are favoring Real Madrid on this one a little bit. That's new. I'd still go with Barca though. If they want it enough they can win this one.

That must have been devastating for Real and Mourinho. Even at their best they still couldn't win, at home.

Barca über alles indeed

is that a joke or do you really suspect foul play?

full round of 16:
Lyon x APOEL
Napoli x Chelsea
Milan x Arsenal
Basel x Bayern Munich
Bayer Leverkusen x Barcelona
CSKA Moscow x Real Madrid
Zenit St. Petersburg x Benfica
Marseille x Internazionale

bold/GIANT BOLD FLAMING GLORIOUS RED to go through.

Just a joke. Regarding the game against Zagreb, I think Zagreb clearly did let the game go, but that Lyon has nothing to do with it. Lyon is not at all known for that kind of business. And today's draw is pure luck.

To qualify : Madrid, Barca, Arsenal, Chelsea, Bayern, Benfica, Lyon, Marseille (because french clubs are in a lucky streak this year, and because Inter is shit currently).

people are rarely lucky against the fucking italians. Inter to go through, as well as Milan against an Arsenal that's relying far too much on RVP. Napoli to pull an upset against an unstable Chelsea, although i may yet have to revise this last bet in the coming weeks, if André Vilas-Boas and Chelsea show that they finally got their shit together.

Italian football is all downhill. Their UEFA index plummets, their stadia are empty, their clubs are poorly managed. They're approx. the same level of play than France (i.e.: they totally suck balls). Inter won the CL two years ago, but they didn't have a single Italian in the team. And they had Mourinho. Even the guy who mops up the floor isn't Italian, this club is a complete joke.

Only glimmer of hope for Italian football: Berlusconi is back for Milan. He's an old, bored billionaire, which means he can buy any player he wants whenever he wants. Besides, he can easily corrupt all the referees, if needed. Actually, I'm sure he will.

no, Basel can't ever catch a break after what they did to Vitória de Guimarães. no, i can't get over it.

Italian teams were good at some point, and Milan are still not a team to be fucked with. Marseille, as befits a french team, lack the steel to make it through this elimination round.

EDIT - Inter is (and has always been) a joke, of course. a shit club that relies on playing finals at home, the Moratti fortune and obscure backstage maneuvers to succeed, fuck them. after they prove my point by eliminating Marseille, that is.

We were given an early christmas gift by seeing the Buddies beat Rangers 2-1. To hope Celtic can ruin their new year as well...

from Benfica's game last night. lol @ kid on the top right.

we're top of the table, 2 points clear of FC Porto, who despite their poor form keep winning matches, even convincingly so, as they did last night. quite a tight contest between us and our corrupt northern rivals.

Eusébio, aka the Black Panther, Benfica's top scorer and greatest ever player (maybe Portugal's too, hard to compare him to Cristiano Ronaldo), celebrates his 70th birthday today.

Image

his speed, strength, technique and veritable cannon of a right foot (left one wasn't too shabby either) made him one of the most feared strikers in the world in his day, and earned him one Ballon d'Or and two Golden Boots.

it's also 8 years to the day Miki Feher died on the pitch, when Benfica played Vitória de Guimarães at the latter's home. i remember the whole thing, he smiled at the ref after receiving a yellow card and simply collapsed just a moment later. RIP.

lol @ Sporting Lisbon, who fired manager Domingos and replaced him with Ricardo Sá Pinto.

after 2 terrible seasons, they hired Domingos Paciência, a former star striker at FC Porto who achieved impressive results as a manager with Académica and Braga. rough start to the season this time, but things changed when they picked up seven consecutive victories... and then lost again, and it all went to shit. they have won only 1 or 2 of the last 9 matches i believe, they're fifth in the table and they're a staggering 16 points behind my Benfica (leaders and arch-rivals).

Domingos is still a good manager in my opinion, and simply had too crappy a squad and too unstable a club to achieve anything significant right in his first year. my money is on him joining FC Porto, who are unsatisfied with their current manager Vítor Pereira.

Sá Pinto is a fanatical Sporting fan, who as a player and manager became known for his fiery temper. as a player in 1998, he punched Artur Jorge, then the manager of the Portuguese national team, in the face, for not calling him for a match. later, as technical director at Sporting, he punched also star player Liedson in the face because he wouldn't shut the hell up during an end-of-game lecture. all best are off as to who is going to be his next victim.

hilarity will surely ensue.
