Finished my school reading early this year 'cause I've been reading lots lately and I'm taking a Linguistics class without much to read in it.

Started David Foster Wallace's Oblivion yesterday, because I'm simureading Despair with someone who is slower than me. In the middle of the first story, Mister Squishy, and it is brilliant. There's a page or two about marriage that is almost word for word stuff I've thought and that's either a) kinda creepy or b) maybe I stole it from him?

finished A Dance With Dragons. a bit disappointed.

spoilers below, i'll use smaller font sizes but you know.
the guy really abused the plague (in the east) and the cold (in the north) to not have to truly advance the plot. a loooooooot of chapters with nothing happening. even without snow and the pale mare, chapter's such as Cercei's were bad, as were many of Arya's. Tyrion so-so, too many fucking references to the fact that he is a lovelorn parricidal dwarf. YEAH YOU KILLED YOUR DAD, YOU LIKE WHORES AND YOU MISS THAT TYSHA WOMAN, WE FUCKING GET IT. and why the fuck is he still dragging around the dwarf woman? she's fucking useless after her animals were killed. and Quentyn Martell, he was fucking useless.

You sound alot more dissappointed than a bit lol. Honestly I did not find it to be as bad as all that. Not as good as the first three, but still pretty good overall with plenty of plot progression for key players we did not see in the fourth book. Leads me to believe the next book will be at a pace on par with the third in order to set up what is presumably the final book to follow it.

Haven't finished it yet, but I agree that Books II and III are way better. Some chapters were quite boring here.

Yeah, the first three books are by far the best, with the third being the winner of the series. I still enjoy the story and am looking foward to its conclusion, but unless something major happens it peaked with book three. If people watching the show thought the first season had some crazy moments (you know what I am talking about), I cannot wait until they see some of the things that go down in that book.

hmmm ok i am more than a bit disappointed. like, what little developments there were were really cool, but i really get the impression that he's writing into a point where it'll be less about the politics and more about the grit of characters enduring training or hardship like disease or really shitty weather, which i don't care for in 1500-page doses.

apparently the next book will have spend quite a lot of time in the land of always winter. i don't want to have like any significant part of the book read like the Asha chapters in DoD meet those bits when Jon was on that big expedition to Craster's Keep.

I was also a bit disappointed in book 4 and 5, but it´s building up nicely. Winds of Winter is gonna be sick.

So Dance with Dragons is just another build-up book like Feast for Crows? ...

Luce Irigaray's Speculum of the Other Woman. French lady psychoanalysis is super... not.

Dune. I suppose the movie prevented me from reading it before, but is truly is a masterpiece.

Finished Nabokov's Despair. It bugged me at times, but by the end I was glad I read it.

Now reading To Be or Not... to Bop, Dizzy Gillespie's autobiography.

Finished DG's memoir. Funny, inspiring, a little repetitive. The ending made me a bit sad because I feel like jazz doesn't have the same place in culture as it did even as late as when the book was written.

Rereading Cormac McCarthy's All The Pretty Horses.

Reading Freud's Beyond the Pleasure Principle. It's so fucking metal. Life as just the "circuitous paths to death", "the instinct to return to the inanimate state", unpleasure as "the tension which then arose in what had hitherto been an inanimate substance endeavored to cancel itself out".

Read David Foster Wallace's short story "Another Pioneer" yesterday. It was styled intriguingly. One big paragraph, layers of narration, speaker seemed to be addressing a courtroom or something (even though the story was not really courtroom relevant). I liked it. It made me think.

Finished All the Pretty Horses. Now polishing off the last couple short stories of DFW's Oblivion. The difference in subject matter and style is jarring haha

Started Foucault's Power/Knowledge, a set of interviews. So lucid and enjoyable.
