I'm surprised by the mentions of Ihsahn. Yeah, After was solid (I listened to it today and wasn't in love with it like I was when it first came out. It seemed a bit weak.) And I don't remember people loving Angl like I did. And everyone generally dogged Adversary. And after one listen Eremita was rather meandering. Needless to say, I love Ihsahn but surprised by the mention of him given past judgments made on his work.

I've been a genuinely loyal fan of Ihsahn. This is not because I worship the man but because he is an essentially valuable musicians of excellent qualities and immense talent. Alongside with Enslaved the mighty, Ihsahn easily makes my list with even the variety of opinions surrounding Angl. His first solo album was of excellent caliber despite the fact that it might have been a tad inconsistent. After was of high prestige and class. His song-writing is without saying legendary in Emperor. I see no reason to be unkind to Ihsahn.

To some extent it is probably nostalgia as to the band he represents, to another extent it is perhaps the potential he possesses: after After I thought he was on the threshhold of releasing his 'OM'. The creativity, songwriting ability, and musical talent is all there, if Eremita meanders as you said the potential is still there for the next album.

And I did like Angl quite a bit, I think Zad's initial review (he said on the thread he would've bumped up the score now) might have colored your past perceptions of our reactions.

I never completely got the Devin Townsend experience, on the other hand, but I completely understand why so many people would list him here.

Meh to you too. Sure Vol(l)ume 14 wasn't groundbreaking and the production was kinda weak, but Thirst was huge. As was The Beauty and the Beer, Beast of Bourbon, and B-Day. A Girl Called Cerveza will again be awesome.

Fanboy alert!

Nah, I agree. Tankard is awesome. While they were never better than Overkill, they have always been more consistent than everyone else. So yeah, I absolutely support DW here.

Can also mention Heathen if they keep it up.

I agree and thank you, but I think Chemical Invasion alone trumps several Overlill albums, not all, just a lot. And when Overkill were grooving along with Pantera and Machine Head, Tankard was thrashing away.

Only gave it a single listen, but it didn't impress me in the slightest.

Possibly. I think it's a badass album and I might even rank it up there with After. I need to go on an Ihsahn binge apparently.

Yeah, I've been very harsh on Ihsahn review-wise. Some bands that I love I'm extra cruel to the first time around - Rush being a brilliant example...

As far as best band (best being extremely subjective) I'd say the most consistent would be enslaved. We will see what the new album brings.

Literally impossible to name one single band in all of metadom that could earn such a title. Maybe you could reduce it down to a few bands per subgenre, but as for one sole band for the entirety of metal I don't believe it can be done.
