Tending the dire hatred has one of the heaviest riffs I've heard in any death/doom band, that mid-paced crushing riff is just a command to headbang. They are one of the death/doom band that truly evokes (hehe) a sense of utter desolation and feeling as if the world is just one massive lifeless shell. Quietus is probably their most accessible overall and its influence is really obvious on Atra Mors as well, maybe without the upbeat drums of course and the violins. This band is amazing.

Great review Milan, of one of the best albums that band that treads the line between funeral doom and doom/death ever released.

Agreed on the notion of it being their most accessible, perhaps because the production was a little cleaner, and it has aged well.

All of their material is quite easy to get accustomed too if you take your time and let the music sink in. I actually like it a lot more than Skepticism's material, and Skepticism is far more streamlined and beautifully ambient compared to this monolith of crushing doom.

Thanks! I'd say it's their best but that might also be because it was my introduction to them. It's also the best gateway into funeral doom one could wish for with its perfect balance between accesibillity and songwriting prowess.

Oh yes though to be truthful its far from my favorite subgenre, but if you like Evoken you'll definitely like diSEMBOWELMENT if you haven't heard of them. I can't really think of many bands that take Evoken's varied songwriting approach aside from Tetraphorm Impure.

Somber, lethargic, extremely depressing album. But that is what makes it a classic! As much as I like uptempo stuff, this album is atmospheric and sets a mood that may other wise be difficult to get into under any other circumstances.

I've heard of them but that's about it. I'll check them out, thanks!

If this is a gateway band to funeral doom where should I go next to hear actual funeral doom? Suggestions?

Ahab Call of the Wretched Sea! But I think everyone else will say Mournful Congregation's Monad of Creation...

Need to check this album out.

I have that Ahab album and the giant and I like them both but in the Ahab review thread people seemed to agree that the giant was a gateway funeral album as well. So idk.

They're dumbasses because The Giant isn't funeral doom. Call is.

I'd go with Ahab's first two and you can't go wrong with Mournful Congregation's The Monad of Creation either. Shape of Despair's Angels of Distress is awesome too. Not really funeral doom to the fullest but if you like that you're about ready for the more difficult stuff I think (i.e. Thergothon, Skepticism, Esoteric).
