I have a feeling this review will be getting a lot of attention.

WHAT?! I must be dreaming! I didn't think that a DT album could be quoted under 90 on this site

Seriously, I downloaded 2 of the songs that I heard should be the best from the album (Root of All Evil and I Walk Beside You) and after more than 5 listens they still left me indifferent. Usually almost all critics praises DT albums but there seems to be controversy over this album :? Why is that? I didn't think that the new songs were that different from other DT songs Iäve heard..

Hmmm it's different than i expected, it was strange in the beginning, but after I gave it a few listens it actually got very enjoyable and it has some aggressive parts too, which remind me of the new John Petrucci solo album. Very well crafted.

Just another good Dream Theater record to listen to, I always enjoyed this kind of music, so I'd give it a 95/100. Might be a lil high for some of you, but it's just my kind of music :) although Train Of Thought was better, I'd give that one the full score, 100/100.

I loved this album, IMO it's Dream Theater's 2nd best album, right behind Awake. The only song I don't really like is Sacrificed Sons, its decent, but I skip it now and then.

I'm going to be in the extreme minority here, but I really love this album. At first I was dissapointed for a few reasons, such as the small amount of killer riffs, lack of guitar solo's and the softness of the majority of the music, but after listening to it a fair few times I have really gotten into it, even the blatantly catchy pop moments seem to satisfy me now. Once again they have done something very differant from all their other albums and if nothing else they have to be applauded for not beating the same path album after album, whilst still retaining their signature sound and pleasing MOST of their fans. It seems very hard for other bands to do this consistantly, but even if you don't like one of Dream Theaters albums, you can hardly call any of them "bad" (unless of course you don't like the band, in which case you would probably think theyre all bad). The title track also contains some great "classic" Dream Theater sounding melodies which have been absent on the last few CDs, this pleased and surprised me no end. Its very early to say but at the moment Id say this is my favourite album since Metropolis Part 2. If you like me have every Dream Theater album and love the band for their diversity, then you should love this one too. Cheers to the ONLY band who has never dissapointed me, no matter what they do! (If you don't count Ayreon as a band that is, heheh)

And everyone, this is just my opinion, so feel free to disagree with it all you like.

Maybe they should have stuck with the Billy Idol reviews. I suppose this is what Lord Requiem is for.

Stop it, they will if they think enough people want it!

I think this score is rather accurate.. the seven songs preceding the title track are well composed and played, but they just don't click with me, especially the Muse rip-off, haha..

but Octavarium itself completely redeems the album.. it's like listening to a slightly harder Flower Kings composition and I love the prog exuberance. Accuse 'em of pointless wankery or whatever but I really enjoyed the closer.

I would've given it a bit higher score, maybe around a 78/100 or 79/100. It's a really very good album. Dream Theater can do no wrong, and while this isn't bad, it's just not up to the Godly standards they set with Images And Words and Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulance.

well, it's not a mystery, I'm not that fond of DT... imo, they're a bunch of talented musicians playing uninspired technical music.. this one is no exception except for two songs : Never Enough (Muse rip-off) & I Walk Beside You (very close to U2)... the rest is... well... boooooring !

45/100

awesome album, best song - Panic Attack. It deserved more than a 75 though.

I dont like Dream Theater but after listening to Ayreon The Human Equation i realized how a great singer LaBrie is(not the best one in the album but great) so i decided to give Octavarium a chance, and i dont liked it , im sorry but dream theater is not for me, I would take Ayreon over DT anyday.

I agree with the score and the review in general, although I strongly disagree with Sacrificed Sons and The Answer Lies Within being weaker songs, I think those two along with Octravarium are the best songs. The Answer Lies Within might not be as catchy as hollow years but its still solid I would say, it's kind of more layed back so the lyrics strike you as more touching. Sacrificed Sons are just miles ahead in terms of quality than the rest of the songs, exept the title track of course. I walk Beside you is just a poppy crap song, panic attack is much better.

Overall I think its a weak album by DT standards, I definately don't think it's anywhere near the greatness of I&M, Awake, FTI and 6degrees.

75/100 is still a good review! I'd give it about an 80/85, though.

I think this is a very good album (90/100) , different from other DT albums but still very good. In fact every DT album is different from the previous and has different things to offer to the listener.
Octavarium lacks a bit of guitar solos, some songs dont have at all, that could be a weak part of the album. But other songs have longer instrumental parts that are pure Dream Theater.
great album

These Walls was not commented on the review, I think that one is probably one of the best songs on the album. Although the guitar solo is very simple, it is still very cool.
