Was never a huge Gorguts fan, but this album is solid. Battle of Chamdo is awesome.

This is a top ten album this year. Plenty to chew on. Great dynamics and atmosphere. This album really takes you somewhere. I haven't stop spinning it since it came out and I keep finding new reasons to love it. In a world where cookie cutter Death Metal runs rampant it's nice to see a band that continues to evolve and build on their trademark original sound.

No arguments there, or with the review. Fantastic album.

Well, gonna have to hear this soon, obviously.

NP--Forgotten Arrows has a Through Silver in Blood era Neurosis styled ending. I like, a lot.

Obscura didn't change anything. Technical death metal had already been an emergent years before, Obscura did nothing that superior bands like Nocturnus or Suffocation (who influenced Gorguts) hadn't already accomplished. That being said even bands who are influenced by Gorguts i,e Portal, Mitochondrion, and the like do Gorguts style better than they do.

These guys remain one of the most overrated second tier acts in death metal.

I think I agree. Even if I like this album.

Portal and Mitochondrion do it better, agreed, but I still like them. That said, Suffocation is also a wee bit overrated by certain people.

Subjective considerations aside.

The impact they had on death metal is rivaled only by the founders of the style. The vast majority of tech/brutal bands have taken many elements of their sound that were simply never expounded upon by other bands and or non existent prior to their emergence in the scene, they are the most influential death metal band post-Morbid Angel across the DM spectum.

Agreed and probably agreed. That said, should one be hung for admitting they find Pierced from Within difficult to listen through?
