Monty Python is overrated. The Dead Parrot sketch and the Argument Clinic are pretty good, though.

That great Western principle of 'self-determination' should support Trans-Dniester to join Russia, but these principles are selectively applied. Until proof can be established demonstrating that Russia is agitating in East Ukraine I've seen nothing egregious that Russia has done in this manufactured 'crisis'. Russia took steps to secure Crimea only because the writing is on the wall that it has lost Ukraine proper to the West for good, and Crimea is both not Ukrainian and also essential for Russia's strategic position in the Black Sea. Even the Hawks that fondly remember fighting the big bad that was the USSR must admit that getting Ukraine in exchange for Crimea and places like Trans-Dniester is a net positive.

But we've seen ridiculous assertions that Eastern Europe is under threat like it is 1938. I think ultimately it is much easier to look on the Russians as the bad guys because the West ultimately knows Russia's power is weakening, note how quickly concerns over China's aggressiveness in the Pacific was retired from the news cycle a few months ago when Ukraine started to deestablize: thinking about a Chinese future is much more disquieting than a Russian past.

Any of my fellow Euros voting in the EU elections next week or whenever it is? The widely predicted UKIP victory here is getting a bit depressing, even with the knowledge that Nigel Farage will probably never be a Westminster MP...

Were the records on the average citizenry somehow kept magically intact? I'll bet a month's pay they were.

A bit late to react but I just stumbled on your post.
I voted, and got depressed by the results in France where the Front National came first. I blame it on the poor job the "socialist" (just in name, mind) government is doing and on the corruption affairs hitting the more moderate right.

I think the general discontent of a growing part of the French population leads to such aberrations. They're so anti-everything they lost their moral compass. It's a real shame but I predict it will pass when things start to go better (if they ever do).
