Wino trades in his electric (for the most part) for an acoustic on this solid collection of rough hewn, whisky soaked highway songs. Stark but not simplistic, melancholy but never descending into self pity, each song adds another chapter to the man's enduring talent. Always respected but never quite accepted by the mainstream, the great Townes Van Zandt would, no doubt, nod his approval.

At the heights of his composition powers, with high melodicism and an abstract sense of structure, this recording is an unusually short release, which harnesses just over half an hour of jazz idealism, setting an atypically high standard for whatever else which was to come, rarely achieved, or even achievable, by the many musicians, who said an awful themselves, but could not say it, with such eloquence, and which such simplicity, with such accurateness, yet with such weight and consequence.

I need to get reacquainted with Coltrane. It's been far too long since I threw this one on the stereo.

Give it a close listening experience. You'd be mesmerized. The interplay of piano, bass, and Coltrane prophetical saxophone-playing, leaves me completely silent. An astonishing silence.

Did you change the original cover of the recording, in your quotation?

Yes. I changed to a downsized image so the text would stay in frame and be easier to read.

Yes, I know why you did it. And it was most excellent of you do it. I realized the resolution of the photo had improved greatly. Thanks, Joshua, for the care, and the attention.

The spirit of rock and the blues, and the reminiscing and the late spirit of classical music, captured, quite endearingly, and originally, on this recording, and one before, and the two after.

Two jazz recordings of the highest caliber. The former, is from the composer and the vibraphonist, Bobby Hutcherson, and the latter, a contemporary live jazz recording, with a brilliantly played orchestra, from the jazz guitarist, Bill Frisell.

The most enchanting and delightful live recording at the end of a golden age for Mr. Gordon, and his most competent Co.

The spirit's mourning, grief, delights, sorrows, joys, longings and relief, were all beholden, on this recording.

The organization of ideas, the straightforward formation of riffs working around organ, and bass, the drums, loud and clear, hitting hard, and precisely, in rhythm, with each and every other instrument, or a misplaced fill, or a outplace beat, never passive, or never dominant, never whimsical, or making it larger than the entirety of the band. The vocalist, attuned, and lyrical-content genuine, and authentic. The melodies tempered, and even-handed. The whole band in civilized conversation, with each other, allowing each member, a rightful place, space and time.

Solid release right off the line for the old Stray Cat.
