Alright thanks for the help guys i'll check some of those out. Too bad WIC didn't have any recommendations. Guess he must not read much.

just don't read what you probably call action packed. my recommendations are:

don't read any crappy ADnD books

instead read A Song Of Ice And Fire by George RR Martin or Lions of Al-Rassanby Guy Gavriel Kay.

Crappy from your point of view of course.
Just give Orion a chance to make up his own mind about D&D books.

from a point of view of any grown up mature person.

I want to start reading some fantasy stuff. What do you guys suggest i start out with? Something exciting and action packed would be nice.

David Gemmell. It gets repetitive as hell but if you start with his best books (Dark Moon or Legend from what I've read) then its good. Certianyl fits the bill for action packed,

I liked Morningstar until it got to the typical Gemmell ending, with everything he's spent 400 pages building up to being rushed out in less than 50. The King Beyond the Gate is the exact same.

Morningstar was only 300 pages though.

Read a few Gemmell books. Not that impressed.

Why does fantasy always rip off LOTR? Any that doesn't please let me know.

A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin, does not rip off Lord of the Rings at all. Also, another fantasy series titled The Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson does not as well. There's lots of great, original fantasy out there.. There's just also lots of fourth rate LOTR ripoffs.

The implication was that Gemmell rips off Tolkien, which couldn't be any further from the truth.

I just get bored with these books about a large evil army of orcs/trolls/goblins/angry Scots amassing to come and destroy the poor wickle willagers, so they get a party of people together involving a barbarian, a hobbit/hobbit rip-off, a weird elf, an obvious love interest sorceress, etc etc. I'll check out what Brahm said, thanks.

What Gemmell book did you read?

The attraction for me is that he (usually) steers well clear of fruity stuff like Elves and Trolls. There are occasionaly quite silly non-human monsters or demons, but they generally are handled well and doen't end up reading like a fairytale.

To be perfectly honest I can't remember. There was one with a war with these weird creatures that had very hard skin or some bollocks...I ploughed through it, and it left me cold. I'm sure there's more, maybe I should look at his website or somehting to see.

That was probably Dark Moon...one of my favourites. But also one of the ones with silly monsters.

Check out his first book, Legend - its another 'defending the fortress against impossible odds' books, but there's no demons or general poofiness involved. The most you get is some people that have advanced out of body experiences.

Found some guff on a website, it was Dark Moon. Didn't like the multiple-personality crap either.
I'm not sure I like his style of writing, but then I've always been a bit leery of Fantasy. I like those comedy ones like Pratchett (obviously), and something about a wizard private detective. Xanthras, or summat?

Not sure. I read a rather short fantasy piss-take recently by L. Sprague de Camp called The Fallible Fiend. It was pretty funny.
