I definitley did not like this album after my first listen. It sounded to generic and it reminded me to much of New World Messiah. But as of recently I have found myself listening to "Avalon" a lot. I remember when I first played NWM, I hated it and started kicking myself for buying it. Recently a buddy of mine told me how much he liked NWM, and after another spin, I actually kind of liked it. So maybe I will feel the same way about The Grand Illusion. Too bad I deleted the file.

Hahaha great review Danny. It's great to see i was right about this album. It's truly an outstanding masterpiece (haven't decided if i should give this 89 or 90)

Quote:
Grand Illusion - their seven studio record ! - will hit the street by the end of this month. After the first spin, I must say I was quite disappointed because this new record sounded like the follow up of New World Messiah (not my favorite album). Thus, the melodic speed metal tunes seemed off and replaced by a softer ambiance. This first feeling vanished away after several spins and I can say Grand Illusion might become my favorite Nocturnal Rites albums. It is a mature album, with established musicians trying new paths - don't worry, no major revolution here - mixing it with the original sound and spirit of the band.

We think alike man.It did sounded as a follow up to NWM.Now i think Grand Illusion is their best album, better even than Shadowland and Tales Of Mystery And Imaginations.Like you said there are no weak tracks, only killers and very good songs which even now after a month of repeated listening hasn't bored me...yet.
Best song: Never Trust

This is what is wrong with this review site--average mediocre generic bands keep getting scores in the 90's, while many great and original bands keep getting scores of under 80.

They werent always mediocre....or in this case crappy. Their first three were great. I've even learned to love the Sacred Talisman. But all of this downtuning and power chords....its kind of boring.

totally agree.. everything post sacred talisman is boring.. I tried Shadowland awhile ago.. and man its just plain borring and simple.. Using the same formular all through the album.. repeating the chorus 80 times in every song, and the singer, johnny something, sings in the exact same way on ervery note... its just a dustcollector.. heard samples from this album.. and for me the only potential it has is a dustcollector..

I don’t know where you get generic from on Sacred Talisman. That has to be one of the catchiest albums ever made. Not to mention the mesmerizing melodies.

It is definitley in my top ten of all time.

I didn't find it interesting (maybe it is pretty catchy, but in a hollow generic way), it didn't make my top 500 8)

Danny, my man, just a comment that has nothing to do with NOCTURNAL RITES.

This is not personal, but with all the respect, you, guys, check your reviews for spelling mistakes before posting them. This whole thing sounds quite ... unprofessional.
And English being a second language is not really an excuse, is it?
As a matter of fact, it is not my first language either...

Other than that I read you every week, honestly!

I wouldn't go so far as top 10, but its an excellent album. Better than anything they've done since (but not before).

Well, it's kinda true... Reading it all just once saves at least 10 mistakes...

I remember this thing raising flames in the good ol' guestbook a few months back. I don't really care if there are a couple of mistakes as it isn't the main goal of the review to be flawless textbook english.

I can agree with that as well, I don't mind mistakes at all, only in my own reviews. But the point was that it looks unprofessional, which I can agree with...

Its not in my top ten all time, but I will say its a great album, better than anything hammerfall ever put out. But the first two are on my eternal play list. i will never get tired of those albums. They are brilliant. I know some people wont agree, and Winter probably wont just because I said it. But they are very special albums, and seeing as how the band has reverted to total crap, the first two are even more special.

Maybe when I'll be a millionaire I'll buy them, but judging by Sacred Talisman I don't have very high hopes. And no Sacred Talisman is nowhere near as good as first 2 Hammerfall albums.

Well I beg to differ, and the first two NR albums are definately better than the stuff Hammerfall puts out....and I like the first three hammerfall albums too.
