Even original Maiden vocalist Paul Di’Anno is featured on this disc and even after 20 some-odd years later is still able sing Wrathchild with the same energy and quality as it was recorded in the old days.

What a great goddamned tribute.

Haha, I hear you mean. DiAnno's more than a bit of an asshole, doesn't surprise me that if he's gonna tribute someone it's gonna be himself.

Never been a big Maiden fan so this tribute doesn't really enthrall me much. But it's certainly nice to see that there is finally a decent tribute album out. Most "Tribute Albums" aren't supposed to honor the band they're paying tribute to, but give a few cents to unknown bands and small record companies.

Check this one out: An obscure band (Lake Of Tears) being covered by even more obscure bands. I challenge you to find one band on this tribute that you've actually heard of.

Sorry, Lake Of Tears is not obscure. But the bands on the tribute are! I only knew Bleak out of that, great melancholic nature oriented black metal project.

Within real Metal Circles Lake of Tears isn't really obscure. But with the general music scene, they certainly are.

Hmm, yeah within the general music scene, only 4 or 5 real metal bands are not obscure...

the fun thing in covers is, in my opinion, to see a well-known song being played in a completely different style and fashion.

for examle chceck out Cradle of Filth playing Hallowed be Thy Name or Children of Bodom doing Aces High - these bands treat the song as if they were their own, an approach totaly different than the original.

this album doesn't feature full bands, just different musicians playing together, so it doesn't have a *specific* sound (not to say its faceless). it rocks hard, sure, but isn't quite the thing I'm looking for.

come on, metal is a huge part of the general music scene, especially ''metal'' in a broader meaning. all the classic bands are well recognised: ac/dc, black sabbath, van halen, led zeppelin, motorhead... - aren't they *real* metal?

AC/DC is not metal, it's hard rock, led is on the border, and most people don't have a clue what Van Halen is. I think Motörhead, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Metallica is how short the list really is. There might be a few others, but acording to mainstream standards, the rest is pretty obscure.

this looks pretty cool, i'm checking it out.

someone mentioned the string quartet tribute - BOYCOTT THAT SHIT! i remember the press release for the SQ Metallica tribute, where they pretty much described the metal bands (they mentioned other bands there, i can't remember which right now) as unlistenable garbage now made accessible by a string quartet. total bullshit.

Solitude Aeturnus's cover of "Hallowed Be Thy Name" is the best Maiden cover you'll ever hear. It blows the original away, too.

Believe it! It's on A Call to Irons: A Tribute to Iron Maiden. I believe the first volume, Opeth is on it as well.

I will never believe that. My shock was more intended towards your blatent blasphemy of one of the greatest bands ever.

That said, I do love Solitude Aeturnus, and the cover was good.

That said, Original>>>>>>>>>Cover

Pretty much disappointed by this tribute :/
Songs are played the same they were recorded in the first place, Di'Anno, imo, has lost the wrath of his childhood when he first sang the song.
At least Testament's singer put some darker tone to a song, while great, is still really cheezy on the lyrics' side ("boohoo I'm afraid of the dark".... just gay but then what isn't in Maiden ;)).
And Lemmy will always handle a rock song no matter what (thanks to his lung cancer :D).

Don't get me wrong, I love Maiden for the most part, but that cover definitely shit on the original.
