I don't see how when Christians do allegory its called propaganda. Sure there's very little subtlety to it, but propaganda? The only bit I could possibly find offensive in Lewis' works is the alleged misogyny, which I haven't seen any serious evidence of for myself (and I doubt I will, as the books don't appeal to me).

I don't find it offensive, just don't see why a non-xtian like Stefan would want to read it. Honestly, Alice In Wonderland's better and it was written by a paedophile.

it's a series of parables about society mixed together with some BLATANT anti-drug crap. look how arbitrary it makes the queen of hearts seem. and alice is basically dragged from one scenario to the next through suggestion and peer pressure..

edit: this is just my interpretation, of course, but it seems pretty duh.

And the Rabbit's a Jew - big nose, pocket watch, always running about worrying, kowtowing to the queen. Alice (Germany) follows the rabbit (the Jew) down the hole (World War I) etc.

either way, I don't believe for a minute that nonsense writers were really as absurd as they were believed to be. I don't like to see parables in everything but if someone sets out to write, I have to assume they have a message, however oblique.

Yeah, I'm not sure I think Cadderly is a great character yet, he kind of irritates me because he's a pussy, or wants to be a pussy, rather! Hahaha. The dwarves crack me up, though. Funny shit. I just started reading Salvatore not too long ago, I read the Icewind Dale trilogy and the Dark Elf trilogy, now this.

I have the other Drizzt books too, and they're next. I may read Straken by Terry Brooks first, though. I probably will. Then I'll throw Eldest by that Paolini kid in there somewhere, too. I need to read Forever Odd by Dead Koontz, too, at some point. Fuck! I got a lot to read! :(

i've been reading Hemingway's "Men without women" short story book and honestly, it's very boring. i struggled to get through the first story.

maybe it isn't so much a great story as more of a lesson of life or something... but that's not what i look for in a book. at least not by itself.

anyone familiar with his works? (not as in "heard of him" because everyone has, i mean actually having read them).

Great series! Cadderly is a dynamic character and a good one at that. Salvatore is one of my favorite authors as well.

Salvatore's masterpieces are definately the Demon Wars trilogies. I'm on the second trilogy but the first and the book connecting both of the trilogies are excellent. Those books are some amazing pieces of literature. One of the highlights of the books is it's use of a sort of Christian-like religion (not actually Christian, but they believe in "God") and its parallels to the Catholic Church in our own history. The way he uses magic in the book is original and superb as well. They are longer than typical Salvatore but I highly suggest any fantasy fan read them.

Other than that, I just started the Dark Tower series and the Vampire Chronicles. I'm also being forced to read Moby Dick for school. I'm planning on playing Mastodon's Leviathan for that one

I'm looking forward to Salvatore's other series', but I've got a bit to read right now! Hahaha. I'm also looking forward to Terry Brooks's pre-Shanarra books on The Great Wars. That's gonna be excellent, another great writer!

I just started reading fantasy like a year ago, so I'm way behind.

My complaint with Mr. Brooks is that he goes into details to an extraneous amount. Other than that, I found him to be a good writer. Then again, I only read the Word & the Void Trilogy.

Keep on reading fantasy. Maybe some day you will reach level 40 Fantasy Nerd. That's when they get to go outside.

The body shop's bill after I got my car back and discovered the front two speakers were blown and the lever to open my gas cap was broken. Luckily I have enough gas to drive back town to the shop so I can scream at somebody.

You know, I couldn't get through the first book in the Word & Void series. It just didn't grab me at all! The Landover books were excellent, as were all the Shannara books (the first fantasy I'd ever read). There was something about the Word & Void that bored me senseless.

Maybe that explains my complaint with Brooks... It does get better, though. The actual story is a very unique and interesting one.

I read the two first books in the Word & Void series and I thought they were good... I do prefer the Landover books (I can't get enough of Abernaty !) mainly because they're a lot more fun...

never tried the Shannara books, is it that good ?

I can't really get into tr00 fantasy anymore, but if you are looking for an absorbing mature 'realistic' fantasy read (more like medieval than fantasy), I would like to recommend Guy Gavriel Kay. I have read 'Song For Arbonne', 'Tigana' and 'Last Light of the Sun' and thought Song For Arbonne was the best by a slim margin.
