Very well crafted album, although I must say the quality of their sound isn't too great on this one... doesn't stop me from saying this is a top metal album, just like the previous 3 Metallica albums (Puppets, Lightning and Kill 'Em All).
The nice thing is, is that there are heavy thrashy kinda songs (blackened, harvester of sorrow), but also songs with slower parts (one, to live is to die). Especially in "to live is to die", the slower and softer part that starts after 4 mins 30 secs. or so, is what I enjoyed. (not that the rest of the song wasn't amazing

)
And to get back to the St. Anger thing which has been started on here:
I always believe Bob Rock had too much input into Metallica's way of working. That's all i wanna say about the factors from outside the band.
Lars Ulrich not practising his drum for years.... all I can say to that is: SAD! SAD! SAD! On the other hand I have heard quite a few nice drum parts on St. Anger, although the sound of the drum is quite annoying. So you must give Lars that he does know how to play some nice drum parts (the drum parts on ...And Justice For All were brilliant by the way).
The rest of St. Anger... well I didn't like it too much myself, like many others, had a feeling of disappointment, like many others, and I even felt like asking my money back at one point. Some called it selling out, some called it crap... I just had the idea they wanted to make their music rawer and go back to their roots somehow (that's maybe why the singing sounds like it is). Too bad their attempt failed heavily.... Maybe better luck next time (at least I hope so for them and the fans sake

)
