Does anyone know of any DM bands that have a sax or trumpet player?

A smooth sax MIGHT sound really cool in the mix... If it already exists, I didn't notice, or flat out don't know about it, but would like to hear it.

Not DM, but the Greek BM band Necromantia used some saxophone on some of their stuff.

You're a bass player, right? Check out Necromantia. They don't use any electric guitar (except for a few solos here and there). All the riffs are played on bass.

maybe that Sculptured CD, that featured trumpets and a technical metal style, although more like Spiral Architect than anything overly death metallish.

If you can't see the similarities there's no need to get your knickers in a twist.

Not DM, but a thrash/punk/rock band called The Mass has a sax player.

Whoa, this is pretty good stuff. I'd imagine its pretty hard to get that tremelo effect on a bass, but then again I've never played an 8-string.

That's a pretty tricky one... Once again it's not strictly DM but Ephel Duath's "The Painter's Palette" has a trumpet on some tracks. If you don't already know that record it's worth checking out. It's flawed in many ways, but the opening track is a really superb example of how a trumpet could work in a metal context.

Recently they go out on tours with a trombone player instead, though- which also works pretty well, although the ability to play ear-splittingly high is something that's sadly lacking.

Apart from that it's hard to think of any. You might want to try Painkiller, though. It's John Zorn playing sax, along with Bill Laswell and Mick Harris of Napalm Death fame on Drums. It's pretty improvisational, and there's really not much for a listener to latch onto though... Nevertheless it's interesting to listen to for a while.

I'm a guitar player, but i'd love to try an 8-string bass some day. It's a really cool sounding instrument.

And speaking of metal bands without guitar...

Check out Cause for Effect. They're from Finland and play what they describe as fusion grindcore. They just got signed and are going to release their official debut later this year.

Their homepage is at http://www.kolumbus.fi/ari.tenhola/. The band consists of just a bass player/vocalist and a drummer. Their music has some very cool rhytmic interplay between bass and drums. Killer live band too.

I sense a bit of a hardcore vibe coming from Ephel Duath. That "passage" song I heard was enjoyable. Good bass work also.

Painkiller was pretty interesting, but not quite as cohesive as I'd like.

Very cool! Copies of their album are all sold out on their website though :x .

Yeah, the latest ED album has a much bigger HC vibe than their first two. Heh, if it's cohesive you're after then I suspect Painkiller are best avoided! I have live album of theirs which is basically just very long periods of meandering improvisation.

The bands Jurgen suggested definitely sound interesting.

Try some Death From Above 1979. Not Metal really... but you might like it... drums, bass, vox and an itsy bit of synth/effects.

Turn It Out (Sample)

The last Ephel Duath is so hard to understand and get into... I mean i really love technical death with weird riffs and rythms but ephel duath is too much... The Painter's Palette is definetely more accesible than the last one...

Ephel Duath is some weird shit. Sounds like Dillinger Escape Plan playing jazz after dropping tons of acid.

Interesting. I don't really like the vocals tho.

Yeah, but they're going to release a new one on Dies Irae records soon. The ones on their website were released by an obscure South American label called Bucho Discos, and thus limited.
