And so, to Chile! To a couple of metalheads in their early-to-mid twenties involved with multiple other projects, none of which you're likely to have heard of, but if any are as good as this debut EP release from Deviants then you're sure to be missing out on! Latino thrash is, as every metalhead worth their salt knows, at least the equal of its Americano or European cousins even before we invoke the name of Sepultura or Sarcófago, and accordingly it's no surprise that Deviants play with a level of intensity and emotion beyond their years. What's a little more surprising is that Legion is quite technically sound for the genre, twisting and turning on a dime and including more than enough death metal DNA to make for a savage yet muscular sound worthy of your ears, even as it charges through thrash metal purity.

So of course, with a critical hat on you can admit there's room for improvement, yet the stop-start pounding of the title track alone convinces, even before it launches into a galloping, chaotic blast of noise that somehow keeps control. The death metal elements are a little more pronounced in some tracks than others - the dark brutality of The Buried Parts of the Past definitely crosses the borderline, for instance. Overall the band keep within their thrash confines, though you can frequently observe their personality attempting to make itself known. Everything about this is solid and heartfelt; intro The Return of the Entity is downright eerie, for instance, even as first track proper Fake Reality piledrives the listener as thought they owe money, Yet you can hear that the band are making this genre their own, and by the galloping battery of closer Baptized in Blood, going straight for your throat like it's 1987 all over again, you'll be completely in love! A tremendous first EP, let's hope a big label throws some money at these guys and funds their deviancy even further.
