A movie as lackluster as Alone in the Dark is almost destined to have a lackluster soundtrack to accompany it. This is not a great exception to the rule. The executive producer of this soundtrack may have spent slightly more than 20 minutes in putting it together. The formula is simple. If the video has been played on MTV2’s Headbanger’s Ball, the band got a song on the disc. All the artists are Roadrunner, Relapse or Century Media/Nuclear Blast artists. For any fan, this might seem like a joke but I don’t question the beneficence of a disc like this. While I’m not personally a fan of the selections, many impressionable kids will pick up this disc and hear a smattering of good bands through the rest of the crap.
There are some decent tracks however they’re all the latest singles from Dark Tranquillity, Dimmu Borgir, The Haunted, Nightwish etc. Pick artists that have had singles in the past five months or so and you can easily see the song selection. I’d heard most of this compilation before on their original albums. The lack of creativity is astonishing. Not a single track is exclusive to this disc. There really isn’t any incentive to buy this disc unless you have the urge to throw money away. This is the blueprint for this year’s free Ozzfest CD.
