We here at Metal Reviews get demos from bands all over the world. Today’s band Separatus comes from Slovenia. They record their music at the present time in their native language (although English language tracks are forthcoming). I was quite surprised by this demo. While their sound draws heavily from Maiden, other more contemporary influences like that of Iced Earth are evident. This is expressed best during the opening of the first track, “Alcatraz.” Some of the same themes evoked on Something Wicked... are heard in this plodding, grinding track. What I like about this band is that they have enough confidence in their playing and song-writing that they don’t have to dress up their music with electronic elements or hide behind breakneck speed. I also appreciate singer Jani’s voice a lot. While I can’t understand what he’s saying, he does have a great quality to his voice. If he could muster a more forceful delivery in the future, I think it could definitely propel this band further.

The second track “No Use” is faster and more aggressive. There are serious Iced Earth and Jag Panzer overtones that show influence but not overt copying. It’s always nice to see a band that can take something and make it their own in such a poignant fashion. The chorus on this track is especially catchy. The solos aren’t the most complex but certainly give you the metal feeling of euphoria when those notes power their way out of the speakers. This recording is technically flawless and a lot of care was taken during the recording to achieve the best sound possible. Kudos for that.

I only had one problem with this demo. It was too short! I really want to hear more from this band as they have some awesome talent and will do some great things in the future. Anyone interested in investigating this band can visit their website (linked above).
