Tenebris is a band that formed in the early days of death metal and was never really recognized for their efforts. This is their debut full-length album released in 1994 on Baron Records. It is a dark, heavy mix that mixes traditional death metal with some atmospheric keyboards and electronics. Overall it's a good mixture that is definitely worth your time if you really enjoy this style.

After a short intro, In Searches begins the album with a lot of dark, heavy riffs create a doomy atmosphere as well as the growls from vocalist Szymon. The first song goes from slow to mid-paced tempos. There is also quite a bit of keyboard work to accentuate the foreboding atmosphere that the band is trying to create. Emeraud is a dark, keyboard laden transition into the next song, Quetzalcoatl. This song is definitely faster, but seems to have less structure than Emeraud. However, the heavy, slower riffs make their appearance about a minute into the song. This almost reminds me of Cathedral with all the distorted, screaming guitars and chugging riffs. Dark Ruller begins with thick drums and distorted, choppy riffs accompanied by growls. It continues like this for most of the song until the end when the atmospheric keyboards take over. This creepy atmosphere leads into Rubin, a song that does more of the same in terms of screaming guitars and chugging riffs. Ancient Clairvoyance begins with the toll of a bell and drums that open into more of the mid-paced riffing that has been going on for most of the album. Gilgamesh starts out with some very creepy howling sounds that lead into a melodic guitar lead still surrounded in this dark atmosphere. This song does a good job of continuing this creepy atmosphere but also adding some great heavy riffs that are memorable and get me into the music.

This album isn't bad if you're looking for some dark, doomy, death metal, but the fact is that there are better and easier to find albums out there. This album can also suffer from being a bit repetitive at times and even after several listens it can be difficult to differentiate between songs, with a few exceptions. Nevertheless, this is a solid debut album from Tenebris and an album that should not be forgotten.
