Despite already having an album out this year Visions of Atlantis have pieced together another release in the form of an EP. So have they managed to improve upon the decidedly average Delta? Well... no. Not really. Opening with the title track Maria Magdalena was probably a smart move though, as it's probably one of the strongest tracks on show. It still has that feairly weedy sound and dubious lyrics that plagued the band's last album, but it's listenable. Distant Shores isn't that bad either, all things considered. But the rest...

Well, Melancholia has an ill-advised "eerie" piano intro in the same track as a super happy bouncy fun time chorus, Last Shut of Your Eyes is the typical power ballad that couldn't bench press a chicken nugget, Beyond Horizon is a three and a half minute outro and I have no idea what was supposed to be happening with Change of Tides as the spoken word intro pretty much ruined the song before it started. Add that to the aforementioned sound and lyrical issues, not to mention the fact that the tempo's almost static throughout the EP, and you have a pretty pointless release. Nothing's changed been learned or improved upon from their last release, so don't waste your time here. A basic progression of any sort would have been welcomed but I'd not be surprised to hear if this was just a collection of B sides that didn't make the cut for Delta. It's another slab of weak "power" metal that you don't need to have in your life.
