    — Thx to all my team mates. I have less and less time for the site ... and 2005 will not see me around that much. My family has taken the lead ;) All the best to all of U for 2005. Danny

Wolf - Evil Star — I really enjoy Wolf's take on classic heavy metal, Maiden style. Solid album start to finish.
  10. 10.
Axxis - Time Machine — I was little worried with their last album. I was afraid Axxis was going to far down the sappy ballad road. Thankfully, Time Machine rocks like the band's early days.
  11. 11.
Pink Cream 69 - Thunderdome — These guys found a winning formula with Electrified and haven't looked back since.
  12. 12.
Dreamtide - Dreams for the Daring — I am a big fan of Fair Warning, and this album captures everything that I liked about Fair Warning.
  13. 13.
VII Gates - Fire, Walk With Me — Surprisingly good songwriting for a new band. Combine that with the raw talent of the band, and I expect big things from these guys.
  14. 14.
Iron Savior - Battering Ram — For me this is a step down from Condition Red. However, Iron Savior remains a steady and strong forece in the metal scene.
  15. 15.
Ten - Return To Evermore — Initially, I was turned off by the reduction in power from the previous album. However, it is impossible to ignore the fact that these guys write great songs no matter what.

Surprises of the Year

  1. 1.
Snakeryder - D.O.A. — This album continues to get a lot of play time. Great 80's part metal that beats even some of the better 80's releases!
  2. 2.
Nasty Savage - Pyscho Pyscho — This is the band's first release since 1989. They haven't missed a beat! A great thrashy record that was more than I expected out of this "comback."
  3. 3.
Miles Beyond - Miles Beyond — This is a really promising Iron Maiden meets Jag Panzer classic metal band. I look forward to hear how these guys progress in the next year.
  4. 4.
  5. 5.
Panaceum - Welcome Back to Eden — I recevied this band's second demo right at the end of the year. A review is forthcoming, but I can tell you that this is the second quality demo that I've received from this band.

Disappointments

  1. 1.
Tesla - Into The Now — This album manages to score some praise, but I find it too much of a deviation from the true Tesla sound. They tried to force themslves into "today's" sound.
  2. 2.
Europe - Start From The Dark — Another reunion that would have better been left on the shelf.
  3. 3.
Metalium - As One - Chapter Four — After a stellar debut, these guys have shown a steady, but very measurable decline with each subsequent release. Too bad.
  4. 4.
Celesty - Legacy of Hate — Their debut was impressive and left me hungry for this album. Unfortunately, I found this album to be boring as hell.
  5. 5.
Michael Kiske — Turning his back on metal after his medicore Supared album was not well received. It's a shame to see this icon of metal so bitter.

Joke of the Year

  1. 1.
All Rap and Hip-Hop albums ever made
  2. 2.
    Nu Metal
  3. 3.
Kiss — Running this band hs become little more than a corporate business for Gene. Got a Kiss Koffin?
  4. 4.
Van Halen — I hate to see this legendary band act like a bunch of damn children. First, the DLR reunion fails (again!). Now, the Hagar reunion is on the rocks. Too many egos in one room.
  5. 5.
    Stupid people
  6. 5.
Assholes — Ahhh... There is no shortage of these in our world. A hearty F.U. to every last one of you! Piss off.

    — I'm not one for long winded babble, so I'll keep this short ;). Again, I started with about 35 albums for this list and had to pare it down to 15. That only tells me that the metal scene is very much well and alive, and 2005 looks to be no different. Masterplan, Running Wild, Grave Digger, Judas Priest, and Kamelot just to name a few are slated to release new studio albums in 2005. Who needs mainstream? There is plenty of metal for the masses out there. Luckily, the power of the internet has unlocked a whole new medium for which bands can introduce themselves to hungry metalheads worldwide. I have made a New Year's Resolution to get to Wacken within the next 3 years. I am tired of looking at all the photos of this monumental event, only to be disappointed (and jealous) that I cannot go. I will get my ass over there one of these days. Let's face it, the North American metal scene is growing, but I can't ever imagine it will match Europe. Philip deserves a huge thank you for all he has done to help improve the site over the psat year and then some. We hope that you enjoy the new forums and enhanced search features found throughout the site. 2005 is shaping up to bring more improvements, so keep an eye out for that. Here's to a prosperous and head banging 2005....

IQ - Dark Matter — I never heard of IQ until Keegan reviewed this album. There are not many progressive rock bands of today that can bring back the sound and feel of those like classic Genesis, and this band does it! This album has suprisingly been in my rotation for a while. This album also created enough interest in the band for me that I recently ordered six of their albums. No other album has done this and for that reason, this album takes my top spot as number 1!
  2. 2.
Exodus - Tempo of the Damned — This band still sounds as good today as they did back when they first hit the scene in the early 80's. One point shy of being 100/100 for me!
  3. 3.
Iced Earth - The Glorious Burden — Everyone thought that with Barlow gone, this band wouldn't deliver. I beg to differ. I like Ripper much better as a vocalist and feel he is more than capable of handling any Iced Earth material.
  4. 4.
Shadows Fall - The War Within — This band gets better and better with each release. Great riffs, lots of energy. People better watch out when I'm driving!
  5. 5.
Therion - Lemuria — I really feel this band is unique and has an identity which makes it difficult for others to duplicate. I can never get bored of their music!
  6. 6.
Vintersorg - The Focusing Blur — Great progressive folk/black metal
  7. 7.
Dio - Master of the Moon — I don't care how old this guy is. He still rocks! This album has really grown on me with each listen.
  8. 8.
W.A.S.P. - The Neon God Part I - The Rise — No matter which way Blackie composes recylced riffs, he still manages to make some killer albums! This is W.A.S.P.'s "Tommy"!
  9. 9.
Borknagar - Epic — One of the few progressive black metal bands that can be compared to "The Yes" or "Deep Purple" of that genre. No matter how many line up changes they have, Borknagar still manage to let the music speak for itself.
  10. 10.
Metal Church - The Weight of the World — Even with a David Wayne wannabe, they still managed to put out a decent release.
  11. 11.
Saxon - Lionheart — While some people get older but wiser, Saxon gets older and heavier! Props to these old geezers from the NWOBH!
  12. 12.
Bad Religion - The Empire Strikes First — One of my favorite political punk rock bands, the AC/DC of power punk!
  13. 13.
Death Angel - The Art of Dying — Nice to see yet another classic bay area thrash metal band from the 80's put out something that seems like they picked up exactly where they left off after a long hiatus!
  14. 14.
Thunderbolt (Poland) - Inhuman Ritual Massmurder — One of the few real black metal albums that remind me of classic ones Emperor, God Dethroned and Mayhem.
  15. 15.
Demonoid - Riders of the Apocalypse — Another great death metal release that I would have never known about if Keegan didn't review it!

Surprises of the Year

  1. 1.
King Diamond - Deadly Lullabies - Live — I still question how much of this recording was actually live as opposed to overdubbed and added later in a studio. Whatever the case, this live release blows away his first one, "In Concert 1987-Abigail". I was suprised at just how good King sang on these live versions!
  2. 2.
Twisted Sister - Still Hungry — Twisted Sister is just one of many bands from the 80's that have re-recorded songs in the new millenium. But to take their best album and try and make it even better is a chance no one else has taken. I give them alot of credit. The end result is above average.
  3. 3.
Exciter - New Testament — More re-recorded songs. Updated with better production and more energy!
  4. 4.
Anthrax - The Greater of Two Evils — One of my favorite speed/thrash metal bands from the early 80's. Again, another effort to update old classics with new recordings and better production.
  5. 4.
Overlorde - Return of the Snow Giant — Never thought these guys would finally release a full length album after only releasing EP's, demos and songs on metal compilation albums. This album could very well have a place on my top 15, but it is the unexpectedness of this release that puts it here. Definately a must have!
  6. 5.
Probot - Probot — An interesting mix of vocalist singing on music written by ex-Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl. To show a side that not many were familiar with was really cool!

Disappointments

  1. 1.
Warrior - The War of Gods and Men — The fact that the music is good but the vocals are weak is what makes this a big dissapointment for me. Rob Rock was incredible on "Code of Life".
  2. 2.
Pretty Boy Floyd - Size Really Does Matter — These guys were on the verge of something almost as big as Poison and Motley Crue back in 1989, but they came just a tad too late and never really recovered since. This album lacks the energy and excitement that the debut had, not even close.
  3. 3.
Gene Simmons - Asshole — Some moments remind one of KISS, but overall a very inconsistent album and very forgetful at best!
  4. 4.
Darkwell - Metatron — A change in vocalists was a real let down for me on a release I was so looking forward to.
  5. 5.
Velvet Revolver - Contraband — A few good songs, but overall more hype than what was expected for me.

Joke of the Year

  1. 1.
Bazzah - Kingdom of the Dead — Utter shit! I can't believe I actually wasted my time listening to it! I've heard better quality music from the ringtones on my cell phone!

    — It's been another great year for me at Metal Reviews. I am quickly approaching my third year with the team come this Feb! Nice to see that we also added some new blood to the team as well! I'm very grateful to work with such a great group of guys who are supportive and have the same goals as I when it comes to this site, which is to make it the best that it can possibly be. I also want to thank the readers for reading any of the reviews we have written as well as responding to them with feedback. I look forward to alot of great releases in 2005!

Top Albums

  1. 1.
Ayreon - The Human Equation — A brilliant concept and a brilliant album. One of the best concept albums I've heard in many, many years
  2. 2.
Nightwish - Once — Another great album....heavier than ever before and an absolute killer production
  3. 3.
Angra - Temple of Shadows — Wilder, heavier and more aggressive, this still has all the Angra staples such as speed and melody but this shows a maturity and might argueably be their best album yet!!
  4. 4.
Iommi (with Glenn Hughes) - The 1996 DEP Sessions — I absolutely love this album. Glenn's bluesy voice combined with Toni's killer riffs makes for a great album. Hard to believe this recording was left to gather dust on a shlf somewhere for 8 years.
  5. 5.
Dreamtide - Dreams For The Daring — Released late last year and early this year in North America, this one's the best melodic hard rock album of the year. I still play this one once in a while.
  6. 6.
Edguy - Hellfire Club — Another solid release by these guys. Not their best and missing some typical "Edguy" nuances in sound but still great nonetheless
  7. 7.
Trans-Siberian Orchestra - The Lost Christmas Eve — I know it's a Christmas album...but it rocks!! The best release so far by the Savatage crew under the TSO alias.
  8. 8.
Power Quest - Neverworld — Not very original but one of the better melodic power metal Helloween clones out there.
  9. 9.
Saxon - Lionheart — Another great release by these veterans. The best album sinceUnleash The Beast or maybe even Dogs Of War. Every song is vintage Saxon.
  10. 10.
Megadeth - The System Has Failed — The best Megadeth album since Countdown To Extinction. A fitting send off if indeed this is the last Megadeth release.
  11. 11.
Dragonforce - Sonic Firestorm — Bigger, faster and more melodic than just about anything else out there. Power Metal on amphetamines!!
  12. 12.
Wuthering Heights - Far From The Madding Crowd — Want some power metal with really different sound? Check this band out!!
  13. 13.
Jon Oliva's Pain - 'Tage Mahal — A nice suprise and a great fix for those of us Savatage fans craving some new material.
  14. 14.
Therion - Lemuria/Sirius B — I started getting into this band with the Secret Of The Runes album. I love their style and really have a style all their own. The material on these two albums is some of the best they've ever done.
  15. 15.
Aina - Days Of Rising Doom - The Metal Opera — Another great metal opera with a whole bunch of different vocalists. Similar in style to Avantasia but certainly not a rip-off.

Surprises of the Year

  1. 1.
Chris Caffery - Faces — Always considered the second guitarist of Savatage, he steps out of the shadows and delivers a killer album. Much like the Doctor Butcher album he did with Jon Oliva, this ones more aggressive sounding than Savatage overall but the influence is still there. Hell.....he even took vocal lessons in order to sing on this one!!
  2. 2.
Pyramaze - Melancholy Beast — After continuosly seeing Ben's orgasmic response to this album, I decided to check it out. For a nre band, they sure have a great sound with a mix of heaviness amd melody and the sort of originality that is going to take the places.
  3. 3.
Eldritch - Portrait Of The Abyss Within — I've always been a fan of this band and believed that they were very close to putting out a killer album. There last one was a bit of a disappointment with the industrial influences but they're back on trtack with this one.
  4. 4.
Vision Divine - Stream Of Consciousness — I thought both of their earlier albums were generic and boring. This new one sees them with a new singer and a great ne3w progressive metal sound. It sounds like a totally new band
  5. 5.
    Tesla - Into The Now

Disappointments

  1. 1.
Iced Earth - The Glorious Burden — It's not that this is bad album, I just can't find enough things I like about it to keep listenening to it. Overblown in production and hype, this fails to live up to my expectations. Ripper Owens has a great voice and can imitate Rob Halfor better than even Rob himself now but he has not got a great sense of melody with his voice like Matt Barlow does.
  2. 2.
W.A.S.P. - The Neon God Part I - The Rise — A cool concept but musically is a very inferior rip-off of the whole Crimson Idol concept. The same sort of songs and instrumental interludes are used bu the songs are nowhere near the quality and it's a severe injustice to the legend that is The Crimson Idol
  3. 3.
  4. 4.
Dio - Master of the Moon — A more Rainbowish sound and lots of promising songs but it just doesn't quite come together
  5. 5.
Kotipelto - Coldness — A much more sombre effort than Waiting For The Dawn, I just don't care for Timo's musical direction on this album

Joke of the Year

  1. 1.
Gene Simmons - Asshole — The perfect title and a big steamy pile musically
  2. 2.
The Motley Crue tour: Can't they see that Mick Mars is not a well individual?? This is nothing but a cash grab.....
  3. 2.
The Motley Crue tour: Mick Mars looks like he's about to drop dead. This is nothing but a cash grab.....
  4. 3.
Stratovarius: The whole soap opera that was surrounding them all years seems to have quelled. Talks are under way to decide the future of this band......kiss and make up will you guys!!!
  5. 3.
Stratovarius: The whole soap opera that was surrounding them all year seems to have quelled. Talks are under way to decide the future of this band......kiss and make up will you guys!!!
  6. 4.
Kiss in general: With 2 imposters in the band wearing the classic Peter Criss and Ace Frehley makeup and with yet another 2 CD best of collection coming out, they're doing nothing but insulting the intelligence of the fans who will buy anything they
  7. 4.
Kiss in general: With Ace Frehley and Peter Criss not in the band anymore and with yet another 2 CD best of collection coming out....it's over...it has been for a while...
  8. 5.
Metallica - Some Kind Of Monster: I don't care whether this movie is good or not, I have no desire to sit through a movie about ANY band undergoing therapy sessions!!!

Words / Final Thoughts

    — Well this brings us to the end of another great year for metal and the very difficult task of compiling my top picks of the year. Several that I had to leave out but are worth mentioning are Elvenking - Wyrd. With a new singer, they've matured into a great celtic-influenced power metal band. Fates Warning seem to be back on track with their FWX album and Rhapsody, with their new opus, Symphony Of Enchanted Lands Part II - The Dark Secret has shown us that they can get even more epic and orchestrated and still pull it off. I like the album a lot but let's see where they go from here. U.F.O. released a solid album this year too with You Are Here, their first album without Michael Schenker in many years and both Vinny Moore and drummer Jason Bonham have filled vacancies within the band quite nicely to continue the legacy.

The power metal flood still seems to be continuing but there's still lots of room to experiment. Stagnation seems to be setting in with bands like Primal Fear, Mystic Prophecy, Mob Rules and Iron Savior delivering album after album of very similar material. There's an infusion of great new progressive metal and the latest albums by Dreamscape and Magnitude 9 are certainly worth checking out.

Metal Reviews has expanded once again in 2004 with addition of very energetic young new reviewers who've added a whole new dimension to the site. We have been lacking with Death Metal and Black Metal reviews and these new guys are doing a great job filling in the void so to speak.

This March, it will be three years ago that I joined Metal Reviews. I still enjoy it very much and I sometimes find it hard to give it the time that's required (but I still manage somehow!!). Family responsibilities and our personal lives have to come first and that's part of the reason that you don't see Chris and Danny around that much anymore. That's the unique thing about the Metal Reviews team, we all chip in to help each other out and I see that sort of thing going on now with the global effort in support of raising funds for those devasted by the tsuamni disaster in South East Asia. If only people were like that all the time and not only in times of crisis, the world would be a much better place

Have a great and safe 2005.

    Marty.

Joke of the Year

I don't think there was a METALLICA release this year

Words / Final Thoughts

    — I don't have much to say this year since I haven't been involved in the team as much as I want to. As I say in last's year awards, the birth of my daughter changed some of my priorities as for now... Secondly, I haven't bought many records in 2004 because... well you guessed it probably, babies don't eat CDs (not until they can walk and start trashing your house) and you can't use CDs as diapers.... This past year hasn't been that much of a great vintage. It still produced a bunch of good bottle, but many of them were sort of corked if you know what I mean. Rammstein's latest release and probably last year's most awaited release is one of those bottle that might have a good taste at first, but overall it really disappointed me alot. Therion however and especially Orphaned Land released quite an album (actually a couple for Therion) that have made quite an impact on the metal scene... at least it's my opinion. I wish I can commit a bit more to metal review next year.

Crims

Top Albums

  1. 1.
Wuthering Heights - Far From The Madding Crowd — This CD is insane. There's so much stuff going on with the music and it's constantly evolving where if you stop listening for 10 seconds you've probably missed something awesome.
  2. 2.
  3. 3.
  4. 3.
Wintersun - Wintersun — Epic, majestic, and probably what Iron should have sounded like. This CD even surpasses Ensiferum's debut and will go down as a classic in the style many years from now.
  5. 4.
Woods of Ypres - Pursuit Of The Sun and Allure Of The Earth — Brilliant? Perhaps. Opeth rip-off? Perhaps. Either way the music found on this CD is very engrossing and though a bit too ambitious at times, remains one of my most emotionally and atmospherically powerful CDs released this year.
  6. 4.
Evergrey - The Inner Circle — They've done it again. I was worried that the quality of this CD wouldn't as high as Recreation Day since it was released so soon after. I'm glad I was wrong. Evergrey is better than ever. One of the most prolofic and best bands in Metal today.
  7. 5.
  8. 5.
Amon Amarth - Fate of Norns — Another outstanding release from Amon Amarth... that's five in a row now. Crushing guitars with subtle melodies, and great lyrics to boot. Their most mature release to date.
  9. 5.
Manticora - 8 Deadly Sins — One of the most underrated bands in Metal did it again. 8 Deadly Sins changes up the sound and song writing style just enough to keep things fresh. The epic song writing and new found Thrash influences make this CD an excellent release in a discography full of outstanding releases.
  10. 6.

  14. 8.
Finntroll - Nattfödd — They now have more in common with Viking Metal than "polka-Black Metal" (not that there's a huge difference) and the songs aren't as chaotic but that's ok. The folk melodies are top knotch, the harsh vocals great, and most importantly: the energy level is extremely high. Do not listen to without your foaming mug of beer.
  15. 8.
Edguy - Hellfire Club — One of the most varied Power Metal CDs released this year, Edguy managed to succeed at ultra-fast, heavy, mid-paced, rocker, and ballad style songs ad all on one CD. Though the genre as a whole is getting watered down, Edguy's amazing song writing skills move them above the legions of Euro Power bands.
  16. 9.
Behemoth - Demi-god — Behemoth is a band who keep getting better with every release. Demi-God is no different and stands out in a big way amongst the crowd of barely above average Death Metal released this year.

  18. 10.
Bloodaxe - Raping The Ancient — I was fortunate enough to listen to a lot of quality Raw Black Metal this year, but there was something in the atmosphere on this CD that blew me away. For some it was Graveland, for others Velvet Cacoon... for me, it was Bloodaxe.
  19. 10.
Behemoth - Demi-god — Behemoth is a band who keep getting better with every release. Demi-God is no different and stands out in a big way amongst the crowd of barely above average Death Metal released this year.
  20. 11.
Dragonland - Starfall — With the proper production, Dragonland has finally reached their potential. There are a lot of little surprises on this CD with quality epic song writing. The keys are very good, but the guitars aren't forgotten either. One of a few stand out Power Metal CD's this year.
  21. 11.

  22. 12.
3 Inches of Blood - Advance and Vanquish — I was grinning with glee with every listen of this CD. Rarely before was 80's Metal sounded so fresh and updated. Probably the funnest Metal CD this year.
  23. 12.
Dragonland - Starfall — I was grinning with glee with every listen of this CD. Rarely before was 80's Metal sounded so fresh and updated. Probably the funnest Metal CD this year.
  24. 13.
Exodus - Tempo of the Damned — Finally! A bay area 80's Thrash band didn't release something that completely sucked. And why was that? Because this CD is actually Thrash! Great Thrash at that! If the new Violence and Dark Angel CD's sound half this good I'll be a happy man.

  26. 14.
Ensiferum - Iron — With such long delays for the release of Iron it's a wonder if this CD reached anyone's lofty expectations. Iron does fall short of their self-titled masterpiece, but that doesn't mean it's not a great CD. There are plenty of classic songs.

  28. 15.
Rammstein - Reise, Reise — Wait, I know what you're thinking. Rammstein isn't Metal. Whether their Industrial Metal or just Industrial, Rammstein released another outstanding CD. Disappointed with the first listen, liked it with the second, loved it with the third. Rammstein's combination of german vocals, Industrial rhyhtms, pounding guitars, and electronic subtlties is unmatched.

Surprises of the Year

  1. 1.
Augury - Concealed — Yet another Technical DM band from Quebec, this was an original and promising debut from Augury. Keep on eye on these guys.
  2. 1.
Dragonforce - Sonic Firestorm — While their previous material was good, nothing prepared me for the onslaught of speedy Power Metal on Sonic Firestorm. This barely missed the top 15 and it's taken double bass heavy PM to another level, which I honestly didn't think was possible.
  3. 2.
Augury - Concealed — Yet another Technical DM band from Quebec, this was an original and promising debut from Augury. Keep on eye on these guys.
  4. 3.
Destinity - In Excelsis Dementia — Interesting combination of all things Black and Death Metal. Varied in its deliver and mostly succesful and its execution.
  5. 4.
Dies Irae - Sculpture Of Stone — I liked their first two releases but this knocked my socks off. With an even heavier dose of Thrash Metal in their Death Metal, I was shocked at how much better Dies Irae sounded.
  6. 5.
Evil Masquerade - Welcome to the Show — Very nice debut with an interesting take on the Power/Prog genre. We need more bands like this willing to do some new things while staying within the realms of Metal.

Disappointments

  1. 1.
Death Angel - The Art of Dying — Not this was a bad CD but I was hoping for the Ultraviolence part two. I guess we'll never hear that manical riffge and drumming again.
  2. 1.
Megadeth - The System Has Failed — Better than their last two but a couple of cool and leads doesn't make a good CD. Not bad but I still expect more from Megadeth... maybe I still expect too much.
  3. 1.
Pain of Salvation - 12:5 — And why did this receive so much praise? Okay, the CD might have something intelligent to say, the vocals are great, and the production is really good, but where are the bloody songs!?! Enough with the spoken word, interludes, and all around go-nowhere song writing. This band could be awesome but right now they're a whole bunch of "I don't get it". Maybe it's just me, in fact it probably is.
  4. 1.

Maybe it's just me, in fact it probably is.
  5. 2.
Construcdead - Violadead — Their debut was one of the most aggressive and frantic Gothenburg releases ever, and one of favorite in the genre. However, this fell flat in a big way. What was originally a unique blast of extreme melo-death turned into Soilwork worship. Blah.
  6. 3.
Norther - Death Unlimited — Oops! This once promising band released Death Unlimited which has one of the most annoying vocal styles ever. Solid riffs and head banging rhythms can't even save this CD. The definition of grating.
  7. 4.
Children Of Bodom - Trashed, Lost & Strungout (CD Single version) — I wasn't bothered by the covers, they were actually good. I was bothered by the lack luster single though. I guess every band is allowed one bad song...
  8. 5.
Fall of the Leafe - Volvere — What the hell happened here? Maybe I missed something but this band used to play awesome Melodic Death. Now they're dabbling with "atmospheric Metal". Stop the madness!

Joke of the Year

  2. 1.
Lamb of God - As The Palaces Burn — I don't get it. Annoying vocals, lame core elements, pseudo-Thrash riffs... how about we stop pretending to almost play Thrash and actually start playing Thrash. That'd be something.

I've had trouble the last few years making these top 15 lists but this year was by far the hardest. Though 2004 had its fair share of junk CDs and slightly average releases, there were a lot more outstanding releases than in the past which made this year especially tough I suppose.

I always like to talk about the various key styles of Metal and what went on with them this past year so here it goes. Black Metal had a great year! The North American underground is stronger than ever and almost rivals Norway's scene in the early 90's for a shear number of quality bands. Black Metal is also a genre where bands are constantly pushing the boundries of minimialist and epic song writing and the result is probably the most prolific style in regards to originality and varied bands. Problem is, with such a high number of highly regarded releases I didn't have time to listen to everything which is why my list is somewhat devoid of Black Metal despite my comments.

Everyone complains about Power Metal becoming stale with all the bands just repeating each other... that might be true but what about Death Metal? Talk about stagnant! With the exception of Behemoth there just wasn't a lot going on in the style. Sure, there were a fair number of close to outstanding releases but overall it was really lack luster, especially for someone like me who prefers traditional Death Metal over Death Metat with tons 'o grindcore.

What about Thrash? Well, I'm still waiting for new Violence and Dark Angel but we did see the welcome return of Exodus and Death Angel. While not quite a come back year, Thrash did see some excellent releases by returning bands and from classics that never went away (Kreator for example). However, there's a still a huge void of Thrash bands that needs to be filled. If only these bands like Fall Of The Leafe and similar bands in the past (Tiamat, Theatre Of Tragedy) changed their style to Thrash instead of Gothic the world would be a happier place.

2004 was also a great year for Viking and Folk Metal. It seems more bands than ever are starting to play this style and the result has been very enjoyable. Much like Black Metal these bands have distinct approaches to their craft and the shear skill and song writing excellence within these bands is outstanding. Hopefully the genre doesn't become too watered down, and the fact the bar is being raised so high so very quickly by bands like Wintersun might prove to have a negative effect on the style. Only time will tell.

I would now like to take this time and abuse my powers in this words about the year section by giving some honorable mention to some CDs which didn't make my list. Thus, the following bands deserve special mention for releasing outstanding CDs this year that shouldn't be missed: Shadow's Fall, Graveland, Skyclad, Bloodbath, Persuader, Elvenking, Borknagar, Demonoid, Death Angel, Die Apok... Reiter, Rammstein, Sacred Steel, and Pyramaze. Okay, now I don't feel so bad about leaving these bands off of my list.

Now, I would like to state for the record that I'm apparently the only person in the world who liked Annihilator - All For You. Well, that's all for me and here's to another great year of listening to Metal!

    Cheers!
    Chris - aka Crims

So here I sit with another year over, staring at my list of top fifteen albums of 2004 and questioning whether or not that it is actually completely indicative of how I feel about this year’s metal crop. The top eight are solidly in place but it is near the end where I could rearrange some things and feel no worse for wear. Some albums that didn’t make it, but definitely would if this were a top twenty five would have been, Worlds Apart, 8 Deadly Sins, Subsurface and several more. Instead of bemoaning the fact that not every single cd I spun more than five times this year can make it into my top fifteen list and replacing the last three slots yet again, I’ll just comment on what I have before I spend another hour or so on this thing. Looking back at my past two year’s awards I came to the conclusion that this year, I’ll scale back the amount of comments on my list. I’ll just throw in a few words on some choice selections instead of my usual five page rant.

Number one on the list obviously goes to the debut album, Melancholy Beast by the best new band in the scene today, Pyramaze. If you’ve been a reader of this site for any extended amount of time you know how highly I regard this music so I really don’t have to elaborate that much anymore, everything that can be said to praise this album I have already stated. Having lived with it for over half a year now and having played it basically every single day since its inception, I can honestly say that this is the best album of the year and nothing else even came close.

I am as surprised as you that Platitude scored as high as they did. The more I listened to Nine after the review went up the more I grew to love it. A superb disc that blended two of my favorite genres, Power Metal and Melodic Rock, I see a bright future for this young band.

Dragonland have taken a complete 180 degree turn musically, lyrically, and stylistically. Gone are the heroic fantasy penned epics, what we have now are deeply personal crafts and a more mature sensibility, one that is a stark contrast to their current name. As a fan of their earlier works I welcome this new direction that they seem adamant in maintaining, this is how one evolves.

2004 was a big year for me personally, it is the year that I fully realized that what I am doing is benefiting the metal community more than I knew. Living in a completely unmetal town like I do, no one gives a shit who I interview, what I review, and what the metal news is but traveling to Prog Power, or seeing Iced Earth, Children of Bodom, and Evergrey in Austin and meeting fans of my work, including members of Kamelot, Helloween, Edguy, Platitude, Pyramaze, Manticora, Wuthering Heights, and Brainstorm has reaffirmed my eternal lust for metal and for spreading the word on what is, and what isn’t worth your time. I recently threw my cards down on the table and applied to Nuclear Blast USA for their publicist position, let’s hope they call me back.

I have noticed also that 2004 might be remembered as the year that metal began to make its way back into the US. With two hugely successful tours by big name acts, (the previously mentioned Iced Earth package that rivaled some of Europe’s tours, and Nightwish’s tour which they’re repeating with Sonata Arctica in 2005) this might open up the doors for other European bands to come over here and play who might have never even given the US the time of day before. There is also a resurgence in metal festivals now, and while the best is certainly still Prog Power USA, I would be lying if there wasn’t more than one other fest that caught my eye. I expect that number to increase this year, but I have faith that Glenn will always have the best lineup and the best package out of them all.

Sometimes brevity is the optimal option so this year I am going to close with a thanks to all our readers, I enjoy all your fanmail (and hate mail too, it shows me what bands have class and who doesn’t) and read every comment posted. Without you this site would not exist and we are eternally appreciative of your support. I wish you all the best in 2005 and if we ever meet up somewhere at a concert, or Prog Power then the first beer is on me.

So much to do, so little time ... I petition for an extra hour each day and for scientists to invent the pill, so that people can consistently survive on 5 hours of sleep without feeling completely burnt out by the end of the week. How many more useful things I could have done, not to mention many more Metal albums I could have given a better ear?

For Metal, 2004 was a good year. Every time I have to juggle the Top 15 and leave albums out, it was a good year. Even though you don't see them up above Stormlord, The Black League, Insomnium, Persuader, Ragnarok, Lifend, Lilitu and Polterchrist were just as deserving to appear on the list. Some tough choices were made ... so I petition for more spots as well. And what about those countless albums I have on my "to experience" list? Something I have yet to acquire? Yup, we definitely need more time.

For business, it was another year of survival. Isn't every year like this?

For my family, we had a brand new son, so I suppose it is good (where is that sleep now?)

For humanity, well, I have had some sad reflective editorials this year, so the state of it still can use a lot of improvement.

A bunch of personal thanks go out to The End and Dave @ Earsplit, guys I wish I could review every promo you sent my way. There is so much to listen to, plus I have to buy and listen to the bands I faithfully follow.

To the fans, someone once wrote on the forums that his tastes really conincided with mine, and he hasn't been disappointed with anything I quoted high and he later purchased. This is probably the largest praise a reviewer can have. Agree or disagree, I always welcome your opinion and comments in the forums.

To the team, it continues to grow, to welcome new members while staying pretty tight all the while. Guys on hiatus (you know who you are), I hope things are working out for you, and you will come back soon, stronger than ever.

    Happy 2005 to you all!

Jay

Words / Final Thoughts

It's unfortunate that this wonderful year of music is going to be forever remembered by the untimely and illogical murder of perhaps one of the most influential metal guitarists of the last 20 years. Dimebag's memory will live on. There is scant reason any musician to perish in such a fashion.

Another sad note of 2004 was the horrific blow dealt to the New York City metal scene. The classic club where virtually every band got their start, L'amour, closed it’s doors forever. The metal scene is reeling since a replacement has not been found. Lamours (as it was colloquially known) will be missed.

We can also only hope for the painful and fast death of metalcore, screamo and any other pseudo-metal nonsense that assaults our ears.

Some additional notes: Best DVD of the year, without a doubt goes to the German power metal masters. I of course speak of Blind Guardian. "Imaginations Through the Looking Glass" has to be the best live concert DVD that I’ve ever seen. From pristine sound, incredibly sharp picture, to the excellent extras and packaging, this one had it all. Other bands should take note, this is how a DVD is done.

The Duskfall released their album "Source" on December 29, 2003. They don’t qualify for the list unfortunately but this album would certainly be in my top 5 if it had qualified. Don’t miss this wonderfully produced masterwork of Melodeath.

I compiled my list from a pool of over 100 albums. Whittling that number down to 15 was a real task. Naturally, some amazing music was shortchanged. Here are some albums that narrowly missed the cut.

Iced Earth - The Glorious Burden — It was a tough, intense, BRUTAL battle for the top spot of this awesome metal year, but on the crimson-coloured fields of Gettysburg, ICED EARTH picked up the win with the excellent Glorious Burden. If an album stays in continuous rotation in my CD player from its release in January to December, I have a case closed. Just the fact that the band not only successfully replaced the über-vocal-God of all time, Matthew Barlow, but also delivered a humongous performance in the form of Tim Owens, I only bow down and salute. Ripper smokes, the riffs smoke, the choruses blast and the band plays as tight as a vice - All capped off with the super-emotional and beautiful extravaganza that is the Gettysburg trilogy. Sure, this album doesnt re-invent any musical wheels but to me, it sounds very fresh and different from all previous IE albums. Simply magnificent, ICED EARTH HAS RISEN!
  2. 2.
Nightwish - Once — For extensive explanations on why this album is stupendous and should be owned by all fans of beautiful and skilful heavy music, please check my full review. It says it all, as does this disc.
  3. 3.
Edguy - Hellfire Club — The finest example EVER that recycling worn-out elements from the glory days of metal can produce marvellous results. With the exception of the overtly sappy Forever, every song here is a metal jewel with some of the most insanely infectious choruses in history and most definitely from this year. Tobias cements his status as the Dickinson of the next generation and reamins one of the most brilliant metal vocalists today, not to mention an awesome live performer along with the rest of the guys. You cant go wrong with jumping splits from the drum riser!
  4. 4.
Exodus - Tempo of the Damned — The Bay Area veterans bless us with the most vile, evil, sarcastic, steel-boot-through-your-jawbones-like and down-right meanest slice of pure thrash metal bliss since Testaments The Gathering. Oodles and oodles of killer riffs charge out like a pack of psychotic rhinos on a mad sugar rush while Hunting beats the hell out of his skins and Zetro spits his venom on just about all of society. An excellent record and a damn shame that Souza left the band come the years end. I hope the boys find a good replacement and continue delivering the goods. Most definitely the Comeback of the year, and possibly the whole decade!
  5. 5.
Skyclad - A Semblance of Normality — Youve got pure metal, youve got celtic-flavored folk, youve got a concept full of clever sarcasm and wit and even a perfect tune to use in the background while going on a horrendous binge with some metal mates. What else could you ask for? Excellent musicianship? Beautiful melodies and a damn good, but thought-provoking time? Well this ones got them all, a marvellous album.
  6. 6.
Ensiferum - Iron — Another folk-induced masterpiece, wonderfully mashing up death metal, traditional heavy metal, awesome guitar melodies, acoustic beauties and unbelievable atmospheres together. Another shame that Jari Mäenpää left the band after the album, but now we have two awesome bands as a result. So I trust it was not a bad move. But however, Iron will be tough to beat.
  7. 7.
Diablo - Eternium — Pure fucking macho attitude. This record is MANLY. If Panteras Vulgar Display Of Power can be given the title of John Matrix of metal albums, Eternium is the at least the Rambo of heavy discs in my view. Head splitting doses of aggro metal, thrash, death metal and overtly catchy melodies that create an awesome disc of accessible brutality.
  8. 8.
Shadows Fall - The War Within — Proof that my long-thought damnation of the state of American metal was completely wrong. Metal is well is the States and this collection of rage, hard core-induced rhythmic blasts, furious guitar bliss and excellent acoustic moments gives a perfect example. One of the hopes of the future, that must be closely observed.
  9. 9.
Trans-Siberian Orchestra - The Lost Christmas Eve — Who says that Christmas songs must be either too sappy or mindless jingles? The Trans Siberian Orchestra shows again that the holiday of crass consumerism and requested family spirit can be portrayed as metal as all hell, complete with über-fantastic vocal performances, rocking melodies, soul-healingly touching atmospheres and a good story concept to boot. This disc will be in my player every Christmas, and all year around for that matter.
  10. 10.
God Forbid - Gone Forever — Holy shit, the yanks pulled off another one! Not only a great live band as I witnessed a few months ago, but God Forbids mixture of traditional metal, thrash, death, aggro and the vocal interplay or growls and clean choruses holds much dynamite in them. I´m convinced that they can pull off even better things that is Gone Forever, which as a thought is frightening, cause this one already kills.
  11. 11.
Jon Oliva's Pain - 'Tage Mahal — The melodies, the massive choirs, the catchiness, the aggression, the groove, the atmospheres – all capped off with the Mountain King himself still in excellent vocal condition. Simply brilliant. All fans of Savatage and hell – METAL should take a visit to Tage Mahal. Not to be regretted, I guarantee.
  12. 12.
Pain Confessor - Turmoil — Like Diablo, one damn masculine slab of aggroish melodic death punishment, that definitely stands as one of the biggest debut albums of the year. Another big promise of the future, who I hope will be able to grow their fan-base beyond Scandinavian shores through record distribution deals.
  13. 13.
Twilightning - Plague-House Puppet Show — The 80s are alive and damn well, baby!!!!! Mashing up massive megahit-choruses, charging guitar work and nuthin but a damn good time, Twilightning can easily claim the prize for Best re-definition of a bands sound of 2004. All rounded up by the fantastic singing of Heikki Pöyhiä, here is one of the biggest future promises on the fields of melodic metal.
  14. 14.
Wintersun - Wintersun — Even though I don’t hold this as good overall as Iron, Jari Mäenpää´s new group blasted out one furious package of metal. This one mashes up just about every heavy music genre imaginable together (ok, not rap metal, but that’s just good with this one;) and the results are magnificent.
  15. 15.
Blaze - Blood & Belief — Once again showing that he was meant to front is own band and was given too hard a judgement in the shadow of the Air Raid Siren, Blaze Bayley killed all with his most personal and emotional album to date. Extremely heavy on one side and brilliantly touching the next, this pure metal ride of human feelings rounds off the best of this year in fine fashion.

Surprises of the Year

  1. 1.
Persuader - Evolution Purgatory — A band that I had never heard of comes out with one of the most massive power-thrash packages built since the excellence of Imaginations From The Other Side. That constitutes as a definite Surprise of the year for me. Again, one name I shall definitely follow closely in the coming years, and so should you.
  2. 2.
Bowlscraper - Red Hair Revolution — With the unfortunate certainty that Pantera will not be making a comeback, I now thankfully have Bowlscraper to turn to in my lust for aggro metal mayhem. Priestesque guitar leads, magnificent vocals, pure heavy aggression and most of all, INSANE GROOVES caught my attention by complete surprise, and left me yearning more Bowlscraper as soon as possible.
  3. 3.
Chastisement - Alleviation Of Pain — Another band that has realized how to really make excellent death metal – throw in some thrashy rhythms and cap it off with lots of massive melodies and emotional instrumentals. A band I certainly hope will get a record deal quickly as Rage Of Achilles fell out of circulation.
  4. 4.
Snakeryder - D.O.A. — Why settle for re-hashes of 80´s hair metal greats that have 3/5 of original members left when you’ve new studs like Snakeryder tearing it up in true Sunset Strip fashion. Girls, parties and good-time rocking for everyone – ahh, makes me feel like even a bigger teen than I still am.
  5. 5.
Rush - Feedback — A more unexpected surprise for me – one of the most un-fucking-believably skilful and talented prog-rock virtuosos throw seriousness and caution to the wind and jam along with the enthusiasm and feeling of a bunch of teens in a garage (but with excellent sounds). Many classics of rock turn flawlessly into feel-good rocking in the hands of these maestros – and dammit if that version of Crossroads isn’t the best one I´ve ever heard, then slap me in the face and throw me out the window.

Disappointments

  1. 1.
    The Death Of Dimebag
  2. 2.
In Flames - The Soundtrack to Your Escape — From Jester Race and Colony to this - *sigh*. Not horrific or complete sludge, but the lack of guitar melodies, good production and the changes in Anders´ singing style just didn’t sit well with me at all. I respect the guys for altering their sound and doing different things, but here it just doesn’t turn into music that I´d care to keep in my player.
  3. 3.
Europe - Start From The Dark — Again, I must respect them for not cashing in on mere 80s glories but really reinventing their sound as much heavier and more serious. But again, as innovation went up, memorability took a huge nosedive. Ill stick to The Final Countdown and Out Of This World as far as this record is concerned.
  4. 4.
Damageplan - New Found Power — Even though this is a good album, when youve got a band with 2/4ths of Pantera, I simply expected more. A victim of too high expectations I would say. A gigantic shame that the band wont probably be able to churn out better results that were bound to be in there as the pack gelled on tour.
  5. 5.
Annihilator - All For You — As with the previous, not a bad album in any means – in fact, this was a very good record. But I would not be honest with this list if I would say that I didn’t expect it to be better – i.e. a disappointment. There are some absolute diamonds here, but with that, also pretty bland filler. A quite uneven album – that’s the major problem with this disc.

Joke of the Year

  1. 1.
Tormented Soul - Tormented Soul — Whether just a simple demo released out or not, this one was given to me as a promo and as a such, it was one of the most hilarious and simultaneously horrific things I heard named under the “metal” moniker this year. If someone for some reason wants that in detail, refer to my review.
  2. 2.
Gene Simmons - Asshole — *Sigh* Well, we will always have KISS.

Words / Final Thoughts

    — What can I say comrades, this was one unbelievable metal year in retrospect – both in the good and unfortunate. Lots of good records, many awesome gigs and festivals were experienced on my behalf and a blasted good time was had to boot. From Metallica to Machine Head and Children Of Bodom to Tarot, I was firmly convinced of the unifying power of live metal. My biggest musical change of the year was that I started to drift away from the “Any-song-with-ten-minute-solos-is-a-good-song” –likings and drifted towards much simple stuff like punk and hard core. I started to really appreciate song writing and lyricism over mind-blowing technicality, even though I still enjoy my weekly doses of Dream Theater and the like.

What to expect from 2005? As far as albums go, the coming releases by Nevermore, Kreator, Judas Priest, Soilwork, Dark Tranquility, Overkill, Audioslave and CHILDREN OF BODOM, along with many more are holding my patience very firmly in their grip. Great concerts are also heading to Finland, which of I hope to catch as many as possible. Especially that ICED EARTH European tour that was unfortunately cancelled, I hope will arrive on these northern shores.

It is not certain how many I will be able to attend because today I will begin my military training that is mandatory for all of us male Finns. This shall limit all of my personal activities, including my participation with Metalreviews. This will NOT mean that I will never write a review again (sorry to get your hopes up, all you Slipknot-bashers out there;) but that my schedule has other priorities for the time being. My reviews will be appearing whenever there has been time to do so.

I hope you all had as thrill-filled metal year in 2004 as I had and wish you all an even more unbelievably moshtastic 2005. Remember in the words of the almighty Diamond One, David Lee Roth: “Its not important whether you won or lost, but how good you looked while doing it”.

Till the next neck-breaking riff, Triple A signs off and salutes you all! ,,/,,/

Ensiferum - Iron — Months have gone by and this album never ceases to blow me away. It’s probably the best folk/Viking themed metal I’ve heard and I can bet it’ll stay that way for a while. With Petri Lindroos as the new band head, let’s hope the band will produce future albums as amazing as this one.
  2. 2.
Behemoth - Demi-god — When it comes to very brutal music, it’s very hard to win me over. This album is a perfect blend of brutality and hyper-technicality and definitely one of the best albums I came across in 2004.
  3. 3.
Wintersun - Wintersun — Deep emotion combined with grade-A musicianship and that Ensiferum sound. Maenpaa, you’ve done it again!
  4. 4.
Dragonforce - Sonic Firestorm — Ultra fast and happy power metal can be cheesy, but these guys evaded the cheesiness and produced an amazing album whose solos alone will send your head spinning.
  5. 5.
Norther - Death Unlimited — the first time I heard this album I thought that it didn’t live up to its predecessor, a few spins later the sheer energy hit me like a ton of bricks and ever since there isn’t a week that I don’t blast this album in my car. One of the best albums of 2004, no question.
  6. 6.
Finntroll - Nattfödd — The best Finntroll album to date. Trollhammaren!!
  7. 7.
Edguy - Hellfire Club — Fantastic production, catchy tunes and amazing musicianship. Edguy have really outdone themselves with this piece of mastery.
  8. 8.
Angra - Temple of Shadows — Before this album I have to admit that I wasn’t particularly too fond of Angra. The drum work on this album simply kills and the guest appearances are truly the highlight that makes this album one of the best of 2004.
  9. 9.
Therion - Sirius B — The Secret of the Runes will always remain my favorite Therion album, but Sirius B and Lemuria come as close runners up.
  10. 10.
Therion - Lemuria — See above
  11. 11.
Nightwish - Once — This album has hit big and the reason behind the success is obvious… it simply kills. Amazing production, great symphonic infusion and just altogether catchy.
  12. 12.
Kataklysm - Serenity in Fire — With each new album Kataklysm become more firery and melodic. Serenity in Fire is no exception to the trend and lets just hope it continues.
  13. 13.
Hypocrisy - The Arrival — After years and years of making music Hypocrisy have shown us that they still know how to make people thrash like hell. The Arrival’s cosmic sound has earned it a place as one of my favorite albums of 2004.
  14. 14.
Amon Amarth - Fate of Norns — With Fate of Norns, Amon Amarth have shown listeners that a band can still sound the same stylistically throughout their discography and still kick ass.
  15. 15.
The Forsaken - Traces of the Past — The crazy riffs and the “At the Gates-ish” sound already make this album great, but what really made me include this album as one of my 2004 favorites is the killer cover of Metallica’s Blackened.

Surprises of the Year

  1. 1.
Evil Masquerade - Welcome to the Show — For a style of metal that has been seemingly perfected by bands such as Avantasia, Evil Masquerade’s debut album shows they can rock just as hard as the others in the game.
  2. 2.
Amaran - Pristine in Bondage — I thought to myself “Here we go, Evanescence all over again”. I was wrong. Absolutely killer riffs and a truly breath taking voice that sure as heck took me by surprise.
  3. 3.
Unearth - The Oncoming Storm — As lame and plastic as most of the metalcore scene is, this is a band which I listened to a few years back and completely forgot about. When I found out about the Oncoming Storm I was truly surprised to hear their music underwent a drastic deviation from the Stings of conscience and was indeed a step forward.
  4. 4.
Scorpions - Unbreakable — As much as I predicted this album would a recycled version of older love songs, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the Scorpions still have it in them. Remember the good times!

Disappointments

  1. 1.
In Flames - The Soundtrack to Your Escape — The only disappointment which can possibly beat this one would be Metallica’s St-Anger. I thought that after reroute to remain there was a slim chance of the band would return to it’s old self – Like a child hoping his runaway dog would come back. I was wrong, and it still disappoints me that such a great band has obliterated the limits of lame, unoriginal and “wiggerness”. R.I.P In Flames.
  2. 2.
Rhapsody - Symphony of Enchanted Lands II - The Dark Secret — Though this latest effort was a “good” one, it simply didn’t live up to the hype and the traditional Rhapsody sound. Change is good… but not overly bombastic tracks that are more suitable for movie scores than anything else.
  3. 3.
The Haunted - rEVOLVEr — Simply said, you’d expect much better from members that were in At the Gates.

Joke of the Year

  1. 1.
In Flames - The Soundtrack to Your Escape — If seeing Anders decked out in tinted shades and listening to his i-pod while lathering his tricked-out hummer with blonde hoes isn’t a complete and utter joke, then my perception of comedy must be demented some how. If imagining Nelly leading a black metal band sounds like a funny idea, then seeing In Flames bop around like a bunch of rappers should also be hilarious. Friggin’ Clowns.
  2. 2.
3 Inches of Blood - Advance and Vanquish — Why is this joke you ask? Because they remind me of a more Metalized version of The Darkness. Good album nonetheless.
  3. 3.
Eternal Combustion - Demo — Read the review…I don’t even have to comment.

2004 was year full of highs and lows, and surprises and disappointments - but overall a good year for metal. May 2005 bring us all health, prosperity, and an endless supply kick-ass Heavy Metal!

I’d like to also take this opportunity to thank the readers and the metalreviews team. Without the readers and their participation on the message boards this site wouldn’t be half as good as it is; and I must also thank them for the intelligent discussion about music that seems to be lacking on other metal sites.

To the metalreviews team: It has been almost a year that I have been part of metalreviews and each day I thank fate for letting me be part of such a great team. This site has really done a lot for me on many levels both intrinsically and externally and I am extremely grateful.

    - Many thanks to Philip and his superb logistical work.

    - Mike, you’re the man who responsible for letting me join the team, rock on! (Don’t think that will hold me back from challenging you to a good wrestle when I come to NYC though)

    - Jay, you made Dascalfest 2004 a memorable bash and I hope to see you in MTL next year also.

    - Aleksie, continue being the crazy Finn you are and one day we’ll party hard in Helsinki with some of your blonde haired female natives.

    - To the rest of the team: Best of wishes for 2005 and thanks for making 2004 great!

Deathspell Omega - Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice — The utter pinnacle of French black metal, Deathspell Omega deliver on all fronts. Let's see how their next one tops this.
  2. 2.
<b>Pig Destroyer</b> - <i>Terrifyer</i> — Heavy, inspired, and balls-out-fucking-insane grind/death with just a touch of punk energy, partnered with deeply fucked-up lyrics and a 32 minute audio DVD track. Worth the three-year-wait. Look for a glowing review soon.
  3. 3.
Anaal Nathrakh - Domine Non Es Dignus — Anaal Nathrakh is a band like no other. Call it black metal, call it boring and samey. I'll respond like this: So was Dark Funeral's first album. Mindlessly savage and brutal, this is the sonic equivalent of RW Chambers's The King In Yellow- an album to drive you insane.
  4. 4.
Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake — I knew Lamb of God wouldn't disappoint, and this is my evidence. The modern evolution of Pantera, now on Epic Records. I can hardly wait for the next one.
  5. 5.
Fear Factory - Archetype — Fear Factory's triumphant return as the leaders of Industrial-ish death metal. Bonescrapingly intense.
  6. 6.
Leviathan - Tentacles of Whorror — Listening to this is akin to taking a trip through the darkest and craziest misanthropic minds of our generation. At this rate, Wrest will be hailed as a latter-day American Varg Vikernes.
  7. 7.
Behemoth - Demi-god — I expected no less from Nergal and his merry noisemakers. Brutal without getting boring and fittingly produced with tight as hell songwriting. Let's just hope it doesn't take three years for the next dose.
  8. 8.
Cannibal Corpse - The Wretched Spawn — No surprises here, just great gore-soaked death metal with loads of technicality. Packed with variety lacking in recent CC albums, this is the best they've been in years.
  9. 9.
Woods of Ypres - Pursuit Of The Sun and Allure Of The Earth — Opeth does black metal? Nearly. These fellows deserve a spot on Season of Mist for sure.
  10. 10.
The Amenta - Occasus — WHOAH. What the hell? This release came out of left field, beat the utter shit out of me, and sold me into slavery. Extreme defined, contending only to Anaal Nathrakh.
  11. 11.
Aura Noir - The Merciless — Blasphemer, you've done it again. That is, kept me interested through the entirety of a rather... unorthodox combination. Excellent work.
  12. 12.
Meshuggah - I — I know, I know, it's only an EP, but I loved it just the same. Can't wait for the upcoming TWO Meshuggah albums.
  13. 13.
Xasthur - Telepathic with the Deceased — Another black metal opus from some wackadoo. Why do all the new black metal icons strike me as insane?
  14. 13.
Xasthur - To Violate the Oblivious — Another black metal opus from some wackadoo. Why do all the new black metal icons strike me as insane? Well, whatever. More focused then his other 2004 release, Telepathic with the Deceased.
  15. 14.
Borknagar - Epic — A statement in prog/black/folk metal. I believe the sum of the parts has finally been surpassed by the whole.
  16. 15.
Velvet Revolver - Contraband — Hard dirty rock with a significant amount of star power and attitude. Despite it's flaws, I fell in love. Admirable.
  17. 15.
Necrophagist - Epitaph — Is this death metal, or jazz? If it weren't for the vocal delivery and the lyrics themselves, it would be a lot more difficult to tell. And this time, Suicmez has a band behind him! I wonder how amazingly intense their live show is...

Surprises of the Year

  1. 1.
1349 - Beyond the Apocalypse — Liberation was... okay, but this is waaaay past that. I salute thee, 1349. Oh, and Frost is awesome on this disc.
  2. 2.
3 Inches of Blood - Advance and Vanquish — Who the hell are these guys, and why has Roadrunner signed em? Who knows, but I know that this is a great homage to classic metal. Soldier on, boys.
  3. 3.
Death Angel - The Art of Dying — Brilliant return from the little kids of the Bay Area thrash scene. They look so old now... I guess they've grown up...
  4. 4.
Lair of the Minotaur - Carnage — I guess those guys from 7000 Dying Rats weren't kidding about making an old-school metal album. Raw, dirty, ugly, underproduced, and knuckle-dragging, this is a luminous Neanderthal among Homo Sapiens. Buy it if you were alive in the 80's.
  5. 5.
Slipknot - Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses) — Staggeringly mature offering from the Iowa whipping boys of metal. Maybe this'll have em accepted amongst metal patrons.

Disappointments

  1. 1.
Annihilator - All For You — Jeff Waters may be the fastest picking guitarist in the world, but he sure can't write songs. Riffs, maybe, but not songs. What happened to the Jeff of Alice in Hell?
  2. 2.
Darkthrone - Sardonic Wrath — Guys, it's alright to wait a couple of years between albums. After all, that's why some of your early albums were so awesome. Stop delivering mediocre stuff year after year, and get back to the Quintessence mind-set, please?
  3. 3.
Scorpions - Unbreakable — I'm pretty sure you're already broken. Where're the riffs, for chrissake?
  4. 4.
Unleashed - Sworn Allegiance — What's with all the Swedish death metal bands releasing lackluster albums lately? This and Grave's pathetic Fiendish Regression (You ran out after You'll Never See..., fellas) earn both Unleashed and Grave a spot on the list.
  5. 5.
Grave - Fiendish Regression — See above. Painfully outmoded and ham-fisted 'return to form' record. Steadfastedly mediocre.

Joke of the Year

  1. 1.
In Flames - The Soundtrack to Your Escape — This was the most hilarious release of 2004. So utterly laughable in everything from production to songwriting and especially the lyrics. In Flames better secure Ross Robinson for their next undertaking, eh? It's probably the route they wish to go anyway.

Words / Final Thoughts

  1. 0

To be honest, the only reason I really liked this year was because of my beginning involvement in metal. If it weren't for that, this year would have been rather lackluster. I do hope 2005 will be more of a banner year for black metal, and that the next Darkthrone album is better then the snoozefest of Sardonic Wrath. Thanks go out to all the metalreviews forumists who made me feel accepted, and especially to the other reviewers, who have been nothing but helpful and kind.

Here's to a better year... next year!

    Cheers,

    — As I've already said, I'm no Power Metal freak, but there are certain bands I really enjoy in that genre, one of them being Iced Earth. When I found out that the new Iced Earth album was going to feature a historical concept I got really excited; I thought that maybe Schaffer could pull it out without the help of mighty Barlow. But the truth is once I heard it I was extremely disappointed; I don't know if it was the absence of Barlow or the clear yet weak sounding production, but the album sounds really weak and uninspired. Too bad because this was such an ambitious project; I really thought that this one was going to be a killer.

    As Empires Rise and Fall

The best way to analize a year in Metal is by checking your "top 15 albums of the year" list. A list like that can give you a very good idea pf how good a year in Metal was. Could you easily pick 15 albums? Where you obsessed with any of those albums for a long time? Did you have trouble letting three or four albums out of your list? or on the contrary: Couldn't you find 15 albums that you consider killer? See, by answering simple questions like these ones, a person can determine if the year was good or not for him.

In my case as you probably know, I'm a Black Metal freak, so I will analyse 2004 from a Black Metal perspective. As I said before let's take a look to my list and from there draw some conclusions.

Choosing the first, second and third possitions of my list was very hard considering the undoubted quality of the three releases that now occupy those places. At the end I decided to give the throne to the French horde Deathspell Omega

becasue of the incredible power the album has as well as the amazing concept developed in the album. Coming second is the American one man project Leviathan, with an album

    — This year rocked. Yet another Progpower gone by, yet another Great Iced Earth album, and yet another surprise by getting to join the team. Guys, you don't know how much it meant to me when I was told I was on board, for that I thank you all. Thanks to Ben for recommending me and being a pretty damn cool person. I've seen some great concerts this year, I know I will see some great ones next year (PRIEST HOPEFULLY), and I know next year will hopefully top this year, even know it would be a hard thing to do. Happy Metal New Years!

Ayreon - The Human Equation — The crazy Dutchman has done it again but this time he outdid himself. Just one look at the supporting cast should be enough of an indicator of the immense level of quality one should expect. Did I mention that the story is fit for the silver screen?
  2. 2.
Therion - Lemuria/ Sirius B — One of my all-time favorite bands succeeded in topping themselves with a double album immense proportions. Catchy riffing and captivating orchestration all rolled into some of the best classical metal compositions you will ever hear.
  3. 3.
Evergrey - The Inner Circle — How could I expect anything less from the masters or dark metal. Genre confinements have never and will never be a problem for this ambidextrous metal machine. Highly recommended!

The Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine
  6. 5.
Neal Morse - One — Want more needs to be said about Neal Morse? He is one of the great musicians of our time on par with the greats. Oh yeah, and this album owns.

The Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine — I finally realized what all the fuss was about and I am eternally grateful. This outrageous ensemble really impressed me with this release's balls out technicality and sheer aural insanity. Not for the faint of heart.
  9. 7.
  10. 7.
Into Eternity - Buried in Oblivion — The praise was all justified as Into Eternity successfully made their mark on an international scale with this tasty hybrid progressive death metal platter. Absolutely top-notch stuff. Go Canada Go!
  11. 8.
Disillusion - Back to Times of Splendor
  12. 8.
Mastodon - Leviathan — These guys have easily become the most hyped band in all of metal and the praise is definitely not unwarranted. Leviathan is a flat out rocking metal album that is definitely deserving of any metalhead's attention. I look forward to hearing what these boys have in store for the future.

    Blackfield - Blackfield
  14. 9.
Disillusion - Back to Times of Splendor — This one came way out of left field. At times Opeth at times Emperor, yet always a feast for the ears......and this is only their debut!

Blackfield - Blackfield — Filling the void that is the time between a new Opeth and a new Porcupine Tree album, this one is a real pleasure to listen too, reasserting my belief that Steven Wilson is one of the great songwriters of our time.

Finntroll - Nattfödd — To those who may have thought these Finns down for the count following a series of truly unfortunate events, Nattfodd is proof that nothing can top the healing power of metal. So crack open the mead barrel, drink deep and let the good times roll.

Quo Vadis - Defiant Imagination — An unfortunate span of four years as well as line-up changes would hinder the release of this album, but upon finally hearing it, I am pleased to conclude that Quo Vadis are back in business and ready to kick some ass. Welcome back.

Winds - The Imaginary Direction of Time — One of the most pretentious progressive metal albums I've ever heard, but with a line-up like Winds has, who would expect anything less? Enjoy like a fine wine.

The Flower Kings - Adam & Eve — One of my favorite prog rock groups once again proved that when it comes to creating colourful, happy music, Roine Stolt and co. are tough to beat..
  25. 14.
Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake — I was not thoroughly impressed with the lack of distinct musical direction and muddy production found on As the Palaces Burn, which is exactly why I enjoy this album so much. A great record written under a tight deadline.

  27. 15.
Neal Morse - One — Unfortunately I only got this album in the past week so I haven't really had time to let it sit. However, I'm sure that had I gotten my hands on it sooner, it would be in my top five.

The Flower Kings - Adam & Eve — One of my favorite prog rock groups once again have proven that when it comes to creating bright, colourful, yet always interesting music, Roine Stolt and co. are tough to beat. Flower power!

Words / Final Thoughts

Overall, I'm quite pleased with this year's output. Though 2005 will most likely outdo 2004 with heavyweight releases slated from Opeth and Dark Tranquillity, I can't really complain as this year put forth numerous releases that I will not be gathering dust on my shelf any time soon. As metal continues to garner wider and wider acclaim on this side of the Atlantic, it will only be a matter of time before all wimps and posers will be forced to recognize that metal will forever live on.

I will take this moment to send out love and respect to all those affected by the tragic shooting in Columbus that sadly took the lives of fellow metalheads including the legendary Dimebag Darrell. You will never be forgotten. May you continue to rock out in the halls of valhalla. RIP (Rock in peace)

    Take care everyone
